I drive a modified Nissan 300ZX.  It gets at least 20mpg, if not more, and it also goes 160.  What do you have?  A G35?  Dude, I could smoke that shit like yesterday's ganja.  What did you pay for that car?  about $35k?  I paid $10k for mine.  Doesn't that just eat you up inside?

I live in an affluent suburb of Dallas. Daily, I see Ford Excursions being piloted by a single person, with no passengers or cargo.

Big whoop. Of course there are going to be times when the driver is by himself. That tells you absolutely nothing about how often he is not. Are you suggesting no one be allowed to drive a van or minivan or pickup truck or station wagon without at least one passenger?

This blatantly irresponsible behavior must be stopped.

Why? Suppose I own a pickup truck. A four seater. I drive construction materials around all day, ferry friends and family to and fro. Then in the evening I hop in the truck, drive to the video store, and pick up a movie for my kids to watch. Doctor J sees me all alone in my Ford F150 and self-righteously concludes I am indulging in blatantly irresponsible behavior and must be stopped.

How you going to stop me? Follow me home and torch my truck in the driveway?

All this "road safety" blather is a crock of horseshit. You want to know the best way to handle the road safety issue? Don't hit anyone with your car or truck. That way it doesn't matter how high your bumper is.

I personally don't care about SUVs really. I think it's really stupid to have one, but you know what? I want all the gas to be gone as soon as possible.

Infiniti q45, I paid 2500 for mine, including insurance fee bs. Engine is in perfect condition, new fuel injectors, leather is almost perfect, paint job is perfect too. Windows work, sun roof works, stereo works (bose).

It's around 278 hp, no mods. I ain't planning on getting mods for it. I'm gonna ride it out, then get out of college and buy either a charger 400+ hp or a camaro that's comming out soon.

Yours would be faster if you have a turbocharged version.

No, I don't think so. People would catch YOU, most likely sooner rather han later. And then you can become closely acquainted with someone named Leroy.

I don't have to do anything but wait. 10 more years of these gas prices and the people of America will be howling at the steps of congress for these laws. Actually, they will probably be demanding much tougher laws than the ones I have proposed. So remember where you heard the ideas first.

I think that's a little unrealistic. Accidents happen, and always will. thats why we don't have nuclear cars. Where and when did you learn how to drive? In the backwoods of Canada during the 1960's? I learned how to drive in the year 1998 on the mean streets of Dallas, TX. 3 of the world's top 10 most dangerous intersections are in this city (according to national accident statitistics). Guess where those intersections are. That's right, the wealthy part of town. Because many rich people drive like inconsiderate assholes who think they own the roads.

You really need to come to Dallas if you want to see the reality of lassiez-faire capitalism. It seems to me that many of your personal philosophies are (over)reactions to to the socialist environments in which you have lived.

In Canada's capital city in the dead of winter in the early Seventies. My first car was a Volkswagen Beetle. My second car was a Fiat X1/9. My third car was a Fiat 128. Each of those cars weighed about a ton. That's right -- about a thousand pounds less than the average "compact" car of today, and about half the weight of the average car on the road in the early Seventies.

The Beetle had no seat belts. The X1/9 had no shoulder harness -- lap belt only. All three of those cars would have ended up the loser in any confrontation with an average car on the road in those days, let alone a pickup truck. So I learned how to drive properly. Never hit anyone. Never was hit by anyone either, except once when a fool tapped me from behind in the X1/9 when we were coming off a freeway exit to a red light.

You say you have dangerous intersections in Dallas? My advice would be to drive through those intersections with extra caution.

I've lived in the Dominican Republic for eighteen years, and I guarantee you there are more terrible drivers in the small village in which I live than in all of Dallas. In the country as a whole there are probably more terrible drivers than there are in all the US east of the Mississippi. For that reason I drive carefully here.

If you're worried about some fool hitting you in your vehicle, the best way to lengthen your odds of surviving is to drive defensively in the biggest and heaviest vehicle you can manage. Something like... oh... let me think here... a honking big SUV.

yup docoter J is right.

and Its alot harder to catch someone than CSI acts liek it is. It takes less than a minute to break a window light a molotov and toss it in the front seat I reckon I could pull it off more than few times without getting caught.

the increasing size of cars is an arms race, and a completely pointless one at that. If everyone took Phred's advice and drove defensively, there would be that much less need for SUVs.

Defensive driving has saved me from about 3 or 4 wrecks in the past week alone. No less than an hour ago, some idiot almost sideswiped me on the way to Taco Bueno. Luckily, I saw him pulling into my lane, so I braked, swerved a little and laid on my horn.

I pity the fool who hits me. Me and my attourney will take that motherfucker to the cleaners. If I didn't love my car so much, I'd let someone hit me just so I could sue them. I swear, the next time a Mercedes turns in front of me when I have the right of way, I'm hitting the gas.

I see a lot of soccer moms that should just get a station wagon but it's not for mew to tell someone what to drive.

I personally think that the car manufacturers could make a more fuel efficient SUV if they weren't in bed with the oil companies.

no I was talking about if I were going straight and someone coming from the opposite direction turned left in front of me.  Happens all the time here.  The wealthy have a bad habit of running red lights in this town.

By the way, if the plan I'm talking about were ever put into effect, the only ones who would suffer are the rich assholes who think overconsumption is a sign of status.

Wrong
These vehicles are used by people of all classes. My step-grandfather owns an old Suburban that probably gets really bad gas mileage but, he's a very long way from being rich.

no offense, but if your grandpa is poor and drives a suburban, he's not very bright.  What's it cost, like $150 to fill the tank on one of those bad boys?

The Suburban was old when he bought it and therefore a very cheap deal. About $2500-3500.

He does have a few things that need to be done which require at least a truck and he uses the Suburban for those tasks. So the vehicle is not wasted. He even uses it to do charity work.

I believe it cost about $50-60 to fill up the suburban.
