Maintaining Humidity
    #5561258 - 04/27/06 12:23 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I need some professional advice. My fruiting chamber consists of a large tupperware container into the bottom of which I placed an even layer of fully saturated perlite. Slightly elevated (by 2cm) over the perlite is an opaque plastic container that in it has my casing. I have also fashioned an airtight lid for this tupperware container (the external one).

I can get the humidity to be 100% in there no problem just by closing the lid. Unfortunately, achieving the 85%-90% RH needed for casings in their final stage is a little bit more tricky. Basically, through trial and error, I have determined that I must open the lid about 1 inch to achieve 85%-90% RH.

Now all that seems nice and good except the surface of my casing looks a little bit dry. This may be partly due to the fact that the room's air, to which my casing is exposed to through the 1 inch gap has an RH of 30%. The surface of the casings (I have more than one) ranges from 75%-100% colonized. Moreover, I have put them into the pinning stage a few days ago and some small mushrooms are growing. I mist once a day after fanning.

Question is:

1. Should I still be misting despite the pins and few mushrooms?
2. How do I change the dryness of the casing without damaging the pins/mushrooms?
3. Are there any modifications to my setup anyone can offer, keeping in mind that buying a humidifier or a cool mist in unavailable to me right now?

Mist lightly with a fine mist over the casings about 2 feet so it falls lightly on..only a few sprays at a time, a few times a day if you can..its important to look at the mushrooms and if they shiny with water, you sprayed to much. You can spray again once the mushrooms arent shiney wet looking, so you can spray many times, but only a little at once.

You should maintain 95+% humidity up until you see pins form..THEN you are in the last stage and you can drop it to 85-90% humidity. If this was done properly at this point you shouldnt need to mist much, and the top of the casing might look a little dry, but you can tell if you were to stick your finger in the surface, it would be wet. Thats perfect now because in 5 days the flush will be over and you can saturate the substrate again. So the casing does dry out from the time the pins form until harvest, but thats only 5 days.

Just leave the lid cracked a tiny bit, 1/2 what you have now, slide off to the side a little bit and mist VERY lightly occasionally.

Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
Casing layer colonization and overlay
