Can anyone answer a question about late taxes?

I'm sure I'm not the only one that kinda let their taxes fall through the cracks this year, so hopefully someone can help me understand something about late penalties so I can get this crap over before I lose interest in finishing it.
Do you have to fill out and pay late penalties if you are getting a check back from the gov't? If so, how would that be filled in on the form?
Now that I'm actually asking the question I can't understand why the hell I can't understand this section or find any info about it. Must be the pot.
Thanks!

If you are getting a refund you have 3 years to file.

Really? See this is only the 2nd time I've fooled with taxes. My parents have a friend prepare them and he used to do mine. Never had them late.
I'm using taxact.com to file them and it kinda walks you through step by step so I assume I just leave that whole section blank... right?
Thanks

I don't know if you leave the section blank or not.
But you have 3 years to file if you are expecting a refund, that I am 100% positive about.
I believe, not for sure, that the late return must be filed and sent in on paper, not electronicaly. But you can use the software to prepare your returns.
But if you are getting a refund, you have 3 years to file without penalty.

Hah, how often do you see something like that in a thread about taxes?
I went ahead and left it blank. If I've got 3 years to file expecting a return, I'm not late filing them and no late penalty.
Thanks. You pretty much confirmed what I expected. I just wanted to be sure before I submitted them.

Even if you just want something to ease your mind, you'll most likely qualify for an extension (if you file for one) which will give you a while to get them done worry-free.
