My little garden (Photos!)
    #5560232 - 04/26/06 08:36 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I finally got around to taking some decent care of the plants in my back yard, and figured I would take some pictures of the lot of them in the process. So, here they are.

First, I'll start with my poppies. I only have 3 poppy plants that survived from my initial planting a couple months ago. Rains and wind killed the rest of them. Those three are in 2 different pots. One in a small pot, and two together in a nice wide pot. I've propped them all up with supports, just in case. They can hold their own weight, but I'd rather not take the chance. It's been getting gusty here at times. So, I drove a pencil into the soil on either side of them, and used rubber bands stretched gently between the stem and the pencil. It's a lot like how saplings are tied up.

And, I have a few seedlings growing in another pot. Hopefully they'll all live, as there should be enough soil for all 3 of them.

I keep them perched near the top of an east-west fence next to the house, where they can get more sun than on the ground. I have no idea what the thing to the left is, but it's damn pretty, so I've tried to take care of it.

Next, on to one of my precious pedros. This is the midget of the bunch. I got a tad greedy in my harvest and cut this one short. It didn't seem to mind. It's sprouted 2 pups thus far, one is getting bigger allready and the other is working it's way out of the areole still. The soil you see it in is the topsoil of my area, which is a dry riverbed. The soil doesn't hold water well, and isn't very nutrative. Cacti don't mind that at all, thankfully.

I have no idea what these two plants are. The neighbor gave them away when she moved out. Both nearly died until I revived them.

And, lastly, here's my tiny little moon cactus. I got it as a gift.

Nice plants, like LSDR said. Good luck to ya.

By the way, I think the answer is an almost definate yes, but if I cut my san pedro and two pups started up, would they grow slower than the cactus would if it was only one pup? I am wondering if it would increase yield at all, but I have a feeling the answer is a no.

All plants look very nice so far, hopefully they all pull though until they're old enough to bloom or harvest. The moon cats is really a beautiful plant, how much does a baby one like that cost?

You can pick those up almost anywhere here. They have a bunch of them outside Rite Aid.. Costs about 2.99-8.99, depending on where you go.

By my understanding, Wal-Mart never sells San Pedro. They just don't carry it. I think Lowes, Target, and even Home Depot does, but not Wal-Mart.

Home deopts had about 4 pots of San Pedros. Each one had about 7 cumulitive feet of san pedro, generally with 4 roughly equal individual cacti. It was awesome, could have gotten 4 great San Pedros for 25 bucks.

Whoops, I forgot to try and answer your question.

As far as I know, growing two pups would proceed a bit more slowly than just one. However, once they got big enough to both start collecting plenty of sunlight, then the overall growth might exceed what would be produced by just one branch. The real limiting factor would probably be the root system, though.

You know, I just realized that my measley 3 poppy plants will not produce a sufficient amount of opium to smoke, not even just once. That was a saddening realization.

By the way, thanks konrade, I was wondering if anyone would ever answer that. Would you reccomend that I take a 5 inch cutting or so from my san pedro (I really only have 1, and it is about a foot out of the pot)? Then I would be growing two seperate SP and would get (hopefully) multiple pups from the one which originaly grew the single cactus.

I cant find them at any of those places. But I live in the north so we cant grow them outside for very much of the year so I suppose they dont stock them because folks dont buy them.

The flower thats white with the oval leathery leaves is in the tobbacco family. Its not a smokable though, it's a night scented bloom also.

Your plant with the red blossoms is a geranium.

They'll probably branch off to more than one head each. Still, I don't see that 3 plants will produce enough heads to yield a significant amount of opium. I suppose I'll have to collect what I can from them, and then save it to be combined with what my spring planting yields when it matures.

I'm not really an expert on pedros. I like them, and I grow them, but I haven't had them very long, so I lack experience.

However, if your pedro is about a foot tall, then I think it would be safe to take a 6 inch cutting of it. Since it's a growing tip, it would most likely be quick to grow roots and resume growth. And of course two seperate san pedro will indeed produce more growth than one. Expect them both to take a significant amount of time to recover before they start growing healthily again, though.

I took cuttings of my pedros about the beginning of autumn, and it's taken all the way until now for healthy pups to form. Then again, it was the cold season then, and they're in a backyard with less than ideal amounts of sunlight.
