Air Pump effectiveness
    #5560190 - 04/26/06 08:30 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Ok, I'm leaving town for a few days, and I need a solution for FAE. I'm using a Rubbermaid tub with perlite for humidification (which keeps it nicely up around 95%). I've been fanning several times per day for FAE, however when I'm gone I wont be able to do it. I've experimented and tried leaving the top slightly ajar, but that casuses my RH to drop down around 80%. Could I get a fish tank type air pump, cut a couple holes in the bottom of the tub and just leave the sucker on the whole time I'm gone? again, the pump is gonna be for FAE, not RH, so I wouldn't want to submerge the hose in water (right?). thx

So will installing an air pump basically make the terrarium "maintenance free" (i.e. no more fanning, even after I get back in town)??

basically. make sure you do the math and make sure your airflow from the pump your buying will be able to fill a chamber 3 times the size of your fc in an hour.

Another possibility is to get the fish tank filter, run the hose in to a hole you put in the side of the tub. Then put a small container of distilled water (a sterile container preferably, it shouldn't matter too much for a fruiting chamber though) inside the chamber. Then put the airstone in the water. I did that and got it to stay around 95%. Plus if you put a very small hole in the bottom of the chamber, it will create air circulation and positive pressure in the tank. Both very good things.

wiggles, That's pretty much the setup I was planning on, except without submerging it in water (my RH is okay as it is, just need the incoming fresh air). figured i'd run the tube in one side at the bottom, then cut a hole in the tub at the opposite side so the air coming in thru the tube has somewhere to get out. nice avatar, btw.

Ahh ok. I know around here at times it gets a bit dry, so without me spraying constantly (which i do even with the submerging airstone) the rH will drop pretty quick. besides, it can't hurt you once the cakes are colonized.

Thanks btw, I think it proudly declares that I like boobies. Yay!
