Re-inoculated jars... it worked!
    #5558470 - 04/26/06 12:21 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Hey everyone
Every so often you hear some newb say that they're jars didn't work or something and they ask if they can add more spores. Usualy ppl advise against it and say to make up a new batch of jars...

Well I had a bunch of jars that I innoced with what turned out to be a bunk sporesyringe (unfortunatly). The strain was thai and I waited longer than I have ever waited on a jar.
Now 2.5 weeks after inoculation still nothing had happened and I decided I was too lazy to re-PC them so I took an amazonian strain syringe that I had and innoced the same jars with that.

Half were PF style half were 3/4 quart rye jars... 3 days later they all show signes of growth and no contams... this is about 3 weeks after the jars were sterilized.
I'm not advising to do this... I'm just saying I was lazy and did it and it worked. So that anyone who wonders can see that its possible..
peace

I'm glad it worked for you but it's a much better idea to make new jars. If they didn't grow anything, there's probably something wrong, obviously. Why put more spores into something that has a problem?

Well I had prepared about 20 jars in total in one batch and PCed them at the same time. Half I made up with Thai and the other half with GT.
The GT jars took off (and have by now been cased) and Thai didn't do anything.... so I was sure it was the syringe not the jars.

no one ever said it's not possible to reinnoculate your jars. However most of the times this ends up in failure, mostly due to your water content being thrown off. There also may be other factors which caused your jars to not colonize such as an invisible contam.

While you may have some success, you will have more consistent results when starting with fresh substrate.

Coda... I agree completly. I'm not saying anyone should do this. Just that I did it in and it worked.
And as said before... I knew that there couldn't be an invisible contam since all the jars were PCed at the same time under the same conditions and the half innoced with GT all worked very very well...
