ok, i have this 2 pint substrate cake fully colonized with mycelium. I was planning on dunking this cake for 16 hrs or more in my refrigerator. but this cake is really huge, so i was thinking of cutting the cake in equal 1 pint halves and dunking each one separately. if i did this, will the cakes get contaminated or would it be fine if each half was dunked individually?

Cutting up cakes is fine. If you don't cut it I would dunk for 24 hours.

a cake that big its hard to know that the inside finished colonizing. cutting it is just taking an unncessary risk without any real benefit... (unless you're planning on crumbling it anyway to case... then you could crumble in a ziplock, fill the bag with water to dunk the chunks, and poke a hole to drain. 16h might be overkill in that case. but again you've still got the risk of uncolonized areas inside if you're gonna crumble, and uncolonized areas just scream "contam me!!" ) i'd just dunk as is, it should take on plenty of moisture, 16h is plenty for that.

Don't use the fridge. Cold shocking Cubes is B.S.!!!! You will be fine either way as long as it is fully colonized. If this is a PF-Cake just scrape off the vermiculite layer and pour cool water into the jar until the cake is submerged, put the lid on it then birth it after 12-24hours. G/L
