pasteurized straw
    #5557087 - 04/26/06 12:04 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

so i pasteurized a pillowcase full of tightly packed and chopped straw in about an 11 tall pot. its just the right amount to fill a mono-tub. anyways the thermometer i have is only about 6" long so i don't know the temp at the bottom. when i poured out the water the stuff at the bottom registered at about 200F but the top 6" was only around 160-170. (should have done it in the oven... didn't even think about it)
my question is, should i toss this straw and do it over, or should i see if i get a bacterial bloom? i threw it in the tub and mixed it up so maybe some of the good bacteria are all over again, but i don't know.
how long does it take if the straw is going to go bad, to go bad? i'd hate to waste a bunch of good spawn only to have it contaminate.

I am not sure what methods you are using but here is what works for me using straw. I use a proven strain with a quart of grain spawn per 13 gal bag of shredded straw. I tried pasteurizing many ways and often got uneven temps in the substrate. I had more problems with trichoderma with the pasteurized stuff. I found that soaking the straw overnight and rinsing it thoroughly with a garden hose until the rinse water comes out clear worked as good as pasteurization with a whole lot less work. If you are a competent spawn maker like I am then you have lots of fodder for experiments. I use the same unpasteurized straw method for oyster mushrooms. The key is to have a vigorous culture to start with so the mushroom overgrows everything in its path before the other contaminants can take root.
