trojan help?
    #5556643 - 04/25/06 10:07 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I've picked up a trojan that always directs me to this page:
http://www.safetydefender.com/

and is constantly running in the sys tray, launching "spybot" warnings every few seconds. I've hunted down and killed several .dll and .exe files but the thing keeps coming back. anyone have any ideas to sae me from a reinstall of XP?

What utilities have you run so far? Here are some you can try if you haven't already. Do a Google search for their web pages & downloads.

Trojan Remover
Ewido
CounterSpy
Spybot S & D
Adaware
TrendMicro Sysclean
HiJackThis
HijackFree
AVG

Make sure you run these in safe mode

These are free or have a free trial period.
Hope this helps
Good Luck

Download http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip and unzip it on your computer.

Reboot into safe mode

Open the folder SmitfraudFix and doubleclick smitfraudfix.cmd

Choose option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and pressing "Enter" in order to remove the infected files.

You are asked: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove your desktop wallpaper and the infected registry keys.

The tool checks if wininet.dll file is infected. You might be asked to replace the infected .dll (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

Restart computer as normal

Go to Control Panel -> Add or remove programs -> Remove if found New.Net or NewDotNet and BPS Security

--->IF New.Net or NewDotNet ain't listed in add/or remove programs, do this<---

1. Un-plug your internet cable.
2. Disable your antispyware and antivirus
3. Download NNuninstall to your desktop http://www.new.net/support/NNuninstall.exe
4. Run NNuninstall.exe file.
->It asks if you want to remove New.Net
->Click Yes.
->When it is done click OK.
->Restart your computer
5. Restart your antivirus
6. Plug your internet cable back.
7. Empty the recycle bin.
8. Reboot as normal

There's also a great but more general anti-spyware and virus guide here.
