Those are a species in the genus Coprinus. My guess would be Coprinus micaceus. Neat mushrooms, the caps turn inky as they age. These are not active nor edible. Spore print will be jet black.

Nice finds though, and good pics too.

Yes, the gills typically turn into a black inky substance as they get old.
There was an interesting thread regarding this in the gourmet and medicinal mushrooms forum. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5526477/an/0/page/0

not all coprinus species do this.. a lot do.

Cool link eris (and thanks for the props!). I have a huge patch of a particularly gooey Coprinus in my front yard and there are indeed huge numbers of flies landing in them. They smell bad too. No doubt those flies are incredibly efficient spore dispersers.

Actually, Coprinus micaceus is one of the edible species of the genus. Although they are small, you can often find enough of them at a time to make them worth a try.

Only use the ones where the gills are still entirely white.

Happy mushrooming!

I see Coprinus Micaceus all the time in my neighbourhood although I didn't know they were edible! Anybody have a way they like to eat them?
Thanks.

Peacefulness.

They're OK if you fry them in butter with some garlic until they just start to get a little crunchy. Of course, what isn't good that way?

Happy mushrooming!
