On a similar note, does the bruising ever go away? I coterized (sp??) a small portion of a cake cuz it wouldn't colonize, now the surrounding area is a deep purple color. Guess it doesn't really matter either way, but I'm just curious.

Bruising = Oxidation = One of the chemicals that makes you trip breaking down (Pysilocyben I think)...But I dount the potency is dropped enough to where it would actually matter enough to where you'd notice.

Yeah I had a small spot at the bottom of a jar about the size of a dime that stopped colonizing over a week ago. I even turned the jar upside down and knocked the cake into the lid and that didn't help. So I just removed it from the jar, burnt the area with one of those jet-engine type cigarette lighters, and put it into a seperate FC away from my other cakes. It's pinning nice, but the cake is bruised. No big deal I hope.

Actually they have linked the blue staining to the oxidisation of Psilocin - although its actually the enzymes that oxidise psilocin that may cause or effect the severity of the actual staining.
Short answer is they dont really know whether it has a direct effect on potency - Stamets and others would suggest that it does - others have suggested its just the amount of the enzymes that react with air on cell damage that cause it.

next time you might try
using a magnifying glass to focus
sunlight thru the jar side
and burn it without opening.
