LC, using Sorbitol.
    #5555750 - 04/25/06 06:14 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

hi ppl! how is it going today?
I was just reading this post over LC and i remembered something that may be useful, or that maybe suck! =P
in rockery, they use different kind of sugars mixed with KNO3, they warm it up, until sugar melt, and then put it in a container getting a solid propellant (if u want to make smoke bombs, it also useful =P)... one of the problems, of heating sugar, is canalization... because it makes the propellant consume in a bad way... finally they found Sorbitol, its a sugar that u can heat, much more than Dextrose or Sucrose, and it doesn't caramelize... its also nice white, and it stay white after been heated...
because i know u really like crystal transparent LC, i was thinking this could be a solution... anyway, i don't know if sorbitol is a good food for the mushrooms, you just have to try it!!!

Well, it sounds promising. Where do you get it?

I think sorbitol is one of those "zero calorie" sweeteners ? If humans don't use it for energy, I wonder if the mushrooms will...

Looks like I'm at least partially incorrect... (Sorbitol - 2.6 calories per gram) Sorbitol is a sugar alcohol. A normal gram of carbohydrate = 4 calories. So it seems sorbitol is only partially digested by humans...

It has 2.6 calories per gram, so it's not in the same league with splenda and equal. It could work.

jajajaj.. oki, i cant get sorbitol in the local stores, and don't have a credit card...
some, if someone try it can he plz post the result in the forum?

=D

also, i just read somewhere that sorbitol is hard to get colonized by bacterias, and that humans can only get energy from it, when its transformed in glucose...
anyway, just try ;D

dont think its gonna work too well.  i mean, it might (though i highly doubt it), but what we're aiming for here is simple sugars - monosaccharides.  of which include glucose (dextrose), and fructose.  this is why things like white table sugar are no good - it is NOT a simple sugar.  brown sugar works, but poorly, and i suspect the nutrients come from the molases that brown sugar is mixed with, and not even the sugar itself.  maple syrup also has some simple sugars and works to an extent.  imitation maple syrup works even better because its basically flavored corn syrup (karo).  there's already lots of choices.

this makes honey a good choice, which is about 30% glucose/40% fructose (and other misc. sugars as well as water.)  fructose carmelizes at 230F and will begin to do so in a PC.  glucose carmelizes at 320F and will not.  carmelized fructose isn't going to hurt, you still have plenty of glucose in the mix.  you don't have to PC liquid cultures ANYWAY.  steaming will get you near perfect success without ANY carmelization.

karo is almost entirely glucose and is said to work better than honey.  reason: its high-90%s glucose again, aka, the simplest of the simple sugars.  i'll repeat it again, glucose carmelizes at 320F.  you can not carmelize glucose in a pressure cooker.  i've said it in about 20 posts now

malt extract works very well even though it is a disaccharide, because it is easily broken down into glucose.  malt sugars are basically two glucose molecules back to back.  malt also provides some extra trace nutrients which is probably what helps give it its edge.

sorbitol on the other hand is glucose with an extra hydroxyl group (aka a sugar alcohol, as somebody mentioned - you don't need to know chemistry to recognize that, the word ends in "ol" - as in alcohol... sugars end in "ose"!)  in order for the mycellium to use it as energy, it would need to be able to break it back down and remove that hydroxyl group.  whether or not the mycelium enzymes are capable of that reaction, i don't know... but why give them extra work to do?

its a nice thought but again, we have several choices that work fantastically well and are less expensive and easier to come by than sorbitol in the first place.... so why?  if you're trying to avoid carmelization, use karo.  you simply can not carmelize it in a PC.  better yet, chill on the overkill and steam your LC jars.  i promise you it works.  if you DO PC and it changes colors on you or something seems to separate from the liquid, its coming from the small percentages of karo that are not glucose.  your glucose content is still there willing and able to feed your mycelium growth.
