Do you know anybody who is working themself to death?

I was just reading an article about people who commute hours everyday to their very high-paced and demanding jobs just so they can live in a swanky suburb with good schools for their kids.
Some people may enjoy working this much, but I surmise that most don't. I think people just like to buy stuff and in order to buy more stuff they work a lot. Also, people who have kids definately have priorities that center around their children and providing them with the best life possible.
Do you think Americans work too much? Do you know anybody who is working so much that their emotional, physical, and mental health is threatened?

Most Americans don't "work" enough. They either get jobs that monkies could do and bitch about they pay, or get jobs that pay a lot and sit on their ass. I think people in the trades are the only ones that actually work.
That said, I know plenty of people that allow themselves to feel like victims of their work, and that in turn affects their health(s).

Do you think it is healthy to sit in a vehicle for hours every week and work 60 or more hours at a stressful job?

Dependent on the person. If the person is strong, it won't affect them much. Most are weak though.

My Dad has worked like that my whole life to provide for me, and I'll never forgive him for it. I got an expensive education. I didn't get a Dad.
From an early age I knew that an hour plus commute each way on top of a 9 to 5 work schedule takes the spirit right out of a man.
If all you want to do is work at your job, than its fine. If you want a life outside of work, yes it will kill you.

Your father did that so you wouldn't have to.

I think my dad may be working himself to death. He managed to get a pharm D degree by the age of 18, 2 PhD's by the age of 21, a master's of business, degree in math, degree in physics by the age of 23, and currently works about 60 hours a week. He seems to like it, but sometimes I think it is a facade he puts on. I question that sometimes though as he is worth 8 figures, but still continues to work (I'd retire).

I love work That's why I dropped out of college to become an electrician.
I honestly can't tell if this is sarcasm or not. I recently dropped out of college myself (with 1 semester to go), but I got an awesome job, and I hated what I was studying. I may go back, but it would be for finance.

Code, manage, nerd it up, advertise, haggle, everything. It's very busy as of late but money is flowing in which is good because life just got very expensive for a few weeks.
I like to "hang" here after I stop working for the day. What can I say. I love the net.

Unfortunatly, my Probation officer wouldnt approve of me working full time doing that. I am looking for other cashier work or labor assembly again. I am going to help my friend in the landscaping business on the side, physical work is more gratifing then sitting on you ass all day, for me anyway. Even if the pay is shittier.

Yeah, my mom. Her goddamn boss is a 55 year old child who doesn't know shit about managing money. He's constantly micromanaging everyone, so in turn they can't do what they're being paid to do, which in turn slows down the work of the whole company.
It's seriously terrible sometimes to see the mood my mom is in. Like tonight, she just got home from a week long vacation in florida, and after the first day back on the job it was the same "i'm so incredibly tired" and "i have to get out of there". It puts me in a funk so bad sometimes that i think i never, EVER want to get a real job.
What do i have to look forward to but going to work for 1/3 of my entire day (no matter how i feel that certain day) just so i can come home and be so very tired from the job i just worked that all i can do is recouperate by eating dinner, watching American Idol, and falling asleep just so i can do it over agian.
This is in no way against my mom, it wasn't her choice to get this shitty job, it wasn't her choice to be so tired she can't and doesn't ever do anything she wants to do. It's against jobs i guess? Pointless, monkey brained jobs like someone said that no human being should be forced to do.
Just like in office space, as funny as that movie is, it's right "Human beings weren't meant to be sitting in cubicles all day filling out pointless forms and papers" or something to that effect. It's true though, we're meant to be running around, outside, farming and hunting and being the animals that we are.
And on the "weak" "strong" argument daimyo brought up: my mother is one of the strongest people i know. But anyone know of the chinese water torture? I hear it's dropping a single drop of water, onto the head of someone strapped down for such an unbareably long time that it drives the person insane.
Sure, drop a couple water drops on my head for a week or two, and i'll laugh at you. If you do it for 20 years though, i'll start to loose it. I think it's no different with jobs like what my mom has to go through. Except it's not just a drop, it's an 8 hour chunk of stressed out time being dropped on her head everyday.
Sorry for that very long rant, just had to get it out. Didn't help much.. but a little.

Yes I do. 90% of the people that live in the Baltimore/Washington DC corridor do.
Man, does it show.
