It should say somewhere on it what plastic material it is. Likely polypropylene, which withstands 170?F easily.

How are you planing on heating the water inside the drum?

With a steel drum you can just use a propane burning under it. But that wont work with a plastic one.

im looking for alternatives right now than burning the bottom... maybe something to blast steam into the water?

or i could hook up a water line from the water heater, which i would crank up to 170.. thaat wouldnt be a good idea though because theres a lady living the basement

boil large amounds of water and toss it all in kinda like that cooler tek. though it wouldn't be so insulated you might ahve to drain it and repeat.

You're not talking about car oil filters, are you?

yes i am.. the black barrels that you put used car filters in.. im doing a hardcore cleaning job tonight.

So far i put sawdust in, and got as much as i can out.

Now i'm scrubbing it out with water+laundry detergent...

The last stage i'll need some kind of heavy duty cleaner so that you can drink out of it when im done.. any ideas?

I'm not saying this with absolute certainty BUT I've seen warnings about using containers that have contained chemicals. Now...

I'm not sure if metal, in terms of porosity and/or absorption, is different than plastic which is generally the question asked...

...I'm also not sure if car oil is actually toxic to a human body...

...but I'd be REAL careful about growing anything to you're going to eat out of that container. Not telling you what to do, I intend this as only friendly advice. Just sayin'...

Yeah... petroleum, mushrooms, and humans, don't seem like a real stellar combination to me.

Agar had a funny post awhile back about pastuerizing with a big barrel. He used a sack to put the poo in, but forgot that the water would add some serious weight to it. He ended up having to build a hoist to pull it out. After all that, the sack broke open and he had a big pile of shit everywhere.

Scatmanrav used a big metal trash can to do his bulk pasteurization. Maybe that would be a cheaper and easier way to go.

If I felt like turning this hobby into some kind of JOB (and when it comes down to it, after considering the time/labour/risk would pay quite poorly) I would:

Fill an old chest freezer with many pillowcases filled with poo. Then hook a garden hose to one end of some copper piping that could be run in a in a criss cross pattern over some kind of flame like the burner from an old barbeque. The other end of the copper pipe would be spewing out extremely hot water (or maybe just steam) that could be used to fill the freezer. The freezer could then be closed and let sit for about half of the day. Before the poo sacks were removed and placed onto drainage racks.

I think I'd rather just stick to an oven bag on the stove and make my money legitimately LOL.

There's always the ice chest method! Agar also had the dead upright freezer with a ceramic heater inside that seemed to do a good job also.

agar also suggested a "brooding bulb" to use inside the fridge in place of a heater..
I bought 2 250W infrareds but i havnt tried this technique yet.

Thats a really funny story about Agar. That sounds like something I might do...get all caught up in the project overlooking a painfully obvious ~MAJOR PROBLEM~ Lol
That scene would no doubt have made a very funny video compilation!  :tongue2:

I have done the brooding bulb experiment. you need a fan in there to circulate heat. otherwise youll get hot spots. Also with one bulb it was registering 170f in there on a test all day, but when loaded with 8 bags it could not maintain temps so I stuck another one in there. construct some kind of sheild for the bulbs. If any water leaks on them they explode. I had a poo bag fall over twice and Make a big mess.

the second bulb that exploded completely shattered the housing and both sent glass a full 2+ft
