You might have a problem with those canning jars. Unless you're using a shakable spawn, such as birdseed or whole grains you're going to have a really tough time removing the colonized cake from the regular mouth jars. Just my 2 cents.

Thnx Kin - Yeah using verm. not bird seed, so do you think it would be a waste if i used the cans I have? I went to Super K and all they had were the Kerr Regular Mason Half Pint Jars. Also - How bout the flour would it work?

flour should work, although it might throw the water content off some, ive never used it. the jars will be a huge pain in the ass. Youll have to dig them out of the jar with a spoon, which means you cant do cakes, youll have to case no matter what. Wide mouth can be found if ya look around some, but im actually suprised you found any at all this time of year.

that flour will work perfectly; follow MMGG exactly. unless you want to break the jars to get them out get wide mouth. look at the jar. will a cake the full diameter of teh jar fall out when you tip it upside down? if not youll have to break either your cake or the glass.

Wide mouth jars simply have bigger mouths than regular jars. They are NOT always tappered. Only if it is specified. So, you can have a widemouth jar that will not let a cake slide out easily. The only kind of jar that will let a cake slide out easily is a tappered jar. Tappered simply means the opening is the same size or bigger than the rest of the jar. Not sure if anyone was confused about this, but it seems that way to me. Hope this clears this things up a bit.

Definitely will most likely not find that canning jars are readily available at your local superstore...but craft stores seem to always have them. A bit on the expensive side though ~Peace~
