Belly full of fungus - some NZ Edibles
    #5546765 - 04/23/06 07:17 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Mushroom season is in full swing in the South Island of NZ...in the past week I've found around 10 diferent species of edible mushroom, most of which I have eaten (though the wine prevented me from eating the shaggy ink caps). All pics taken within the past few days. This is the most I have ever delved into the wild mushroom thing in such a short timespan. It's great!

-Giant puff ball (Calvatia gigantea)

-Boletes (Boletus sp)

-Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus sp)

-Enoki (Flammulina velutipes)

-Shaggy ink cap (Coprinus comatus)

-Shaggy parasol (Macrolepiota rhacodes)

-King Stropharia (Stropharia rugosoannulata)

-Honey Mushrooms (Armillaria limonea (?)

-Field Mushrooms & White buttons (Agrocybe sp)

I also found some wood ear which I forgot to take a pic of.
EDIT: Found some more and grabbed a pic. The wood ears were growing in a happy coexistence with some funky fluoro orange little shrooms with enlarged pores instead of gills - very common around here.

-Wood ear (Auricularia polytricha)

And on the medicinal front I found what I believe to be Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor):

Damn, those pictures are making me hungry lol :drooling:

It's spring here in the UK so there hasn't been much about but it's St Georges day today so the St Georges mushrooms should be up any day now (Calocybe gambosa)

Can't wait!

Looks like you're having a great season down there. I'm jealous.

Happy mushrooming!

Wow... those are nice! I'm not finding any flavor of fungus in my area really right now, much less anything tasty like those. All I've found in the past months is a few puffballs past their prime.

Cheers for the compliments people, I am working hard to hone my shroom photography skills this season.

Shroomydan, you can see more of those giant mo-fo's here:

They are still fruiting some 4 months later!

Looks like you got it all right there.....every shape, size, and color.....a fungal cornucopia.....nothinlike that initial explosion of the season for selection and freshys in their prime.....especially when the bugs haven't quite figured it all out yet.....
keep goin over em......hmmmm.....which are the best ......cant tho you got too many of the prime candidates......
nuthin like a giant Puffball triple decker ShroomBurger.....and when ever I think of the epitomy of true "wild" mushroom taste for some reason the powerful flavored Rachodes always pops up for me.....definately cant beat those fresh Strophs.....or the Oysters new....or.......I give up......
although tend to find the Turkeys consistantly a bit leathery.....or maybe its just me.....
although think I have givin up on those darn Enokis tho....just cant seem to find any populations worth bendin over for again for taste....givin em more than enough chance .....they might vary tho in other places.....and havent bent over for that species of Suillus for years.....but I tried for a long time.....hear in some countries it actually has some taste......
Now I'm inspired to go hunt dinner before darkness.....might go hit a chanty patch.....what the heck just bring the flashlight :dancing:

Personally I dig the flammulinas, maybe they're better over here...it probably depends on the type of wood they grow on etc. I also love oysters, shaggys and boletes. The puff ball was delicious when brushed with olive oil mixed with crushed garlic and chopped rosemary and then grilled till golden brown...mmmm...

Found some more wood ears so I added a pic above.

Ceps? What are those? I found a shitload more fieldies yesterday as well. Made a huge pizza with fieldies, enoki, and oyster mushrooms....yummm. Kept me going for todays hunting!

EDIT: Just realised you're probably talking about cordyceps right? You crazy fucker, where did you manage to find those!? On a caterpillar? What variety were they? I would love to find some one day.
