My jars wont colonise wtf
    #5552793 - 04/24/06 09:20 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

My jars have been incubating since thursday night and I nocked them up with a honey LC, that colonised for 7-8 days. I see no visible sign of growth and I do not know why. I just started a karo lc for if this one does not work.

I soaked the grains for 12-16 hours since they always sprout when I soak for 24 and even with jsut 12-16 some sprouted so Then I rinced and then simmered for 45-50 minutes and then loaded and pced for 60 minutes. Then Nocked up.

What could of gone wrong?

Too much moisture possibly? 10cc's is alot unless your grains were fairly dry.

Some are prety dry looking

My last jars were much much wetter that worked.

And I cant imagine moisture being a problem since mycelium can grow in pure liquid such as the lc. Why would moisture make growth not happen

Turn your jars upside down. If there is standing solution, then they're too wet. I recently made the same problem, so I let them sit for a week or two just to see what would happen. They began to colonize but wouldn't finish where there was standing solution.

I've read different things here and there on the shroomery that states that a small amount of vermiculite on the bottom of each jar would help with using for LC. Just let the verm soak up some solution and then shake after a minute or two.

Never attempted, but look into it. I'm not sure how to make the grain more dry using the soak and simmer method.

Anyone care to chime in?

When I open my TIT it smells like grain strongly. Is that common?

If they're not growing, where did you buy your mycelium?  :smirk:

IMO, your jars are hopeless. 10cc's is far too much solution for any jar unless you have some experience with altering the water content of the grain.

If you're using tyvek as a filter, turning the jars over will only soak your filter and send an open invitation to contams anyways.

Start over and try using 2cc's of solution per jar and try to be patient with them. If you originally started your LC with spore solution, then you already have the patience to wait only a few days for growth.

How well did you shake you LC jar before you pulled the solution out? How well did you shake the syringe before innoculating? That mycelium sinks kinda quick. But I guess that would mean at least one jar should be doing really well.

Ill wait a week and if no growth well my new lc should be done by then and then I will use 3cc of liquid instead.
