I have tyvek as the top - no metal lid, just the ring and the tyvek with micropore tape covering the tiny hole.
Is this ok? I don't have to uncover that hole do I?

I just punch one hole in the top & stuff w/ polyfill, then i just mix 1tbsp of karo in w/ 6tbs of h2o pc it for 20mi then its ready to go... but just using tyvek for a top sounds interesting and easy. you can cover the injection hole w/ any tape. they lc doesnt really need much fae... the dam stuff is growing under water anyways

Here's some advice concerning this hobby. When you have a jar of something incubating, forget about it and read this website until you forget what species and strain you're growing.
As a noob, I confronted the same issues with patience. The way I solved it was to begin a new project that kept my mind off the jars already started. That way you've got something to keep your mind off it and if the first one fails, you've got another one going.
Don't give up. You'll be missing out on something good. The more you become bored with it, the more exciting it will become.

I've had them "pop" after close to three weeks and the myc was very vigorous so it was a pleasant suprise!

What are you using, just a pint sized jar? Would making your amounts bigger and using a qt. jar be bad idea... or just use same amounts in a qt. jar?
To everyone else too: Thanks for all the advice guys

i dont know if anyone hit on this, you said you were using just tyvek
for a lid correct? I am almost certain that i have read somewhere that
doing that will dry out your substrate. if your substrate is too dry the
myc will grow slow if at all and if it does grow it will stall and
most likely never hit 100% definitely use a lid with a hole drilled or
punched in it.

I heard thats only if you are not shaking the jars while its colonizing (ie. once at 25%, 50% 75%.. etc.) That and make sure you have verm mixed in with the grain... which I do.
My problem is, it's been over a week and I have seen NOTHING at all !! But now like I said... some light greyish colors.

right but the tyvek allows the jars to "breathe" it just doesn't allow
contams through. so if your jars are "breathing" through a huge space
instead of a small hole the jars will dry out much faster and if you
took them out of the pc before completely cooled they will definitely
dry out very very quickly

Well with all the verm I have mixed in there, it still is plenty wet in there... I can see all the moisture on the sides of the glass.

Plus Reckless seems to have had no problem using just tyvek for the lid: http://www.shroomtalk.com/mushroom/forum6/668.html
He also has this to say about it, a couple posts down in that thread: "If you use the lid with the tyvek, your tyvek will melt to a mess."
Still doesn't explain why I didn't see anything at all... unless I just have to wait more.

OK well its just my 2 cents i just recommend that you use a lid in
future applications. i found some literature on the subject, in
The Mushroom Cultivator on page 46- "Using only filter discs on wide mouth jars is not recommended due to the excessive evaporation from the grain medium"-
and if you have grey growth you could have cobweb mold in there and if
you have one contam you could have other contams that make it seem wet
such as wet spot or wet bubble. however i have not seen your jars so i
really dont know what the moisture content is really like its just an
idea/suggestion

Its about 19 posts down in the thread:
Quote:
Posted: Fri Mar 24th, 2006 05:04 am It is nessasary for air exchange to take place in order for myc to grow,if the jar was sealed you would see little to no growth..On a brf cake your verm layer provides the same, filters and allows for gas exchange. If you use the lid with the tyvek, your tyvek will melt to a mess...noc thru the tyvek and patch hole with small pc of tape..
also if your jar is sealed tight b4 pc,it may explode..

the link i gave you doesn't even have 19 posts, agar is an experienced veteran here you can be pretty sure that he is right. and it wont seal if you have a hole in the lid. i have used the tek and have had success with out encountering melted tyvek.
