Hyphae question
    #5551842 - 04/24/06 05:54 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

How far out do monokaryon hyphae spread? I ask as i translocated some bark and it is now coming up to the season. I have checked it and found circular mycelium rings from about 2mm to a cm spreading out from where spores have landed. However, are these rings mearly monokaryon hyphae spreading looking for the hyphae of other spores or can it become diploid from a single spore? The rings seem to be dying back and im not sure if it is the new habitat or because hyphae fusion is not occuring. Thanks alot! I wold post some picture but my digicam is way too crap sorry..

Monokaryotic mycelium (from what I understand) can survive quite a while. It can really take over huge masses of land, however, it is very hard to be sure the entire mass of mycelium originated form a single spore. It is more likely that a series of spored germinated in an area from a fruiting body and all of these networks are going. Furthermore, from what I know, it would be very hard to tell the difference between dikaryotic and monokaryotic mycelium, as the two monokaryotes can unite, but not fruit because environmental cues are not right.

There is supposedly one of the largest organisms in the world as a huge mass of mycelium that covers half of Michigan's upper peninsula. With extended mycelial networks the only bad thing is senescence and degeneration as the mass continues.

It can't become diploid with only one spore. The only way to tell for sure is with a microscope.
