Most people seem to associate surrealism with drugs in their mind.

I've noticed this trend myself. I spent 2 years in art classes in high school. First-year art is a pretty easy and fun elective, so it's populated by a large number of people who often have little grasp of art and creativity.

When taught about the school of surrealism, a lot of the people in the class seemed to make comments amongst themselves about the artist and drug use. I always find it pretty funny. None of my favorite surrealists used drugs. In fact, my personal favorite surrealist --to the best of my knowledge-- didn't even drink (my favorite surrealist is Ren? Margritte, BTW).

I wonder if this misconception is as common as I think it is. I can see WHY people would make that assumption... surrealist art does call to mind the kind of things seen by a hallucinating person. But still, it also seems sadly ignorant of what a creative person is capable of when completely sober.

Hehe... that quote is actually mine. It's a motto, of sorts. I put it in a quote just to be self-indulgent

The top image in your post I've never seen before, but the second one looks vaguely familiar to me. I don't know why or from where, though.

I don't know who the artists are but these are the captions that were next to them.

First one:40"x44"- spraypaint decalcomania crystal cave, full photo-negative oil painting. inverted image reveals photo-positve, try it!!

Second one: "Spiked by an angel" colour pencil onto white paper

I used to do that... the first few times I smoked pot I would sit down and draw really bizarre artwork. It was always pretty poorly drawn, too. What I drew definitely showed a strong surrealist influence, but that wasn't because of the drugs, it was because I was a fan of surrealism. The drugs just made it more fun :stoned:

Pictars:

(I added color while sober):

The second one I did:

I consider them to be very intricate doodles. I'm not exceedingly proud of them, but they were really fun to make.

What shocked me, though, is how far they departed from the kind of artwork I normally produce. Different style, different level of technical ability, different everything.

I normally do this sort of thing:

I'll stop rambling now.

Damn... Hands are really hard to draw. They say it's one of the hardest things, but i'm not sure who they are.
