My first setup (pics)

Been trolling and reading the shroomery now for about a year...gathering as much knowledge as i can before jumping in headfirst on cultivating.
I'm starting to get the supplies for my first setup, going to be going with the poor man pod chamber and some PF cakes. Seemed to be the best place to start.
I've already got two 56qt containers. I'm going to double them up for an incubator, then use one for the fruiting chamber.
Just empty 1/2 pints for now...

I added an extra seal to the lid so i can control the humidity better. Just your everday foam weatherstripping

I would say 12 jars fit ok...

Well that's as far as I've gotten, lol. I just felt like sharing, and i'll also update my progress as it goes (hopefully problem free!)
I've put on order some perm, brown rice flour and perlite from mycosupply.com I've also ordered up a 36" flexible bubble wand for it and a 10" 100 watt submersible heater for the incubator. Will hopefully find a nice airpump this week locally.

I wouldn't use a tub like that for incubation. You want complete darkness.

I wouldn't use a bubble wand if you are going to use perlite for humitification. You're supposed to use a bubble wand by submerging it underwater and clay pellets or geolite. Perlite HOLDS the moisture by itself. You can still use your airpump for air exchange. That's what I did.
But I think your FC may be a little too big for cakes. I would suggest one or two smaller rubbermaid bins, maybe the 12-15qt sizes. You won't have to use as much perlite, and air exchanges will be quicker.
Have you thought about doing bulk poo for your firt time? It's really fucking easy and kicks ass! and a casing layer is unneccessary if you are intimidated by that...

i'm not using perlite in the FC, i'll be using hydroton. Not sure why i said perlite in the first place, lol.
but do you really think it's too big? it's just a tad larger the the one used in the tek...i don't see why it'd be TOO big as long as the humidity is kept up, and my air pump is large enough to move the air 2-3 times per hour.

Well I took the advice given and darkened up one of the tubs to use for the incubator. I'll just buy a new one that has a clear lid for the FC.

it's water based..sprayed on the inside. good looking out though. Does oil based paint have an ill-effect during the colonization of the jars?

A quick trip to the pet store yielded me some new items today. Picked up an air pump, a check valve, some tubing, and a thermometer.

I also grabbed a smaller 50qt tub for the FC. Only one they had with a clear lid

does this look alright to have the wand setup this way? (of course the wand will be UNDER the rocks once i fill it)
it goes down and turns on the other end to run along the end.

also got some verm and brown rice flour finally!

Would it be ok to go ahead and do my jars and sterilize them now even though i won't be innoculating yet? And if so, about how long will they be good for?

In theory jars can last for months if they're sealed and unpunctured. I know I've stored mine for awhile with abesolutely no problem. If you're using any additives that might rot in the presence of water you may wanna hold off though.

Your setup looks great. One of the few noobs who actully read some shit before diving into it. (THANK YOU!!!) As far as the jars, I would make mine the day before you plan on shooting them up. You need to make sure that they are cool when you put the spores in. Ive waited as long as 3 weeks to shoot mine up, and they ended up being fine. Good luck to ya, I know you will do great.

yea, i think i recall reading that letting them cool overnight is a good thing to do. Man, there's a lot of details that one can easily overlook when experience is low. I'm glad this forum is here to remind me of things along the way!

well i wouldn't say i'm "wasting my time"..but ok
Question!- Hydroton wasn't found locally...so i went with lava rocks. Now is there a need to sterelize them at all or boil them first? I rinsed them a few times to get all the dust and stuff off, good enough?

sterilizing wont hurt if you're paranoid and bored but its really not necessary. they started life super hot where nothing could live, and are non nutritive to support the growth of anything... so they're pretty well sterile as they are other than anything airborne thats otherwised landed on them (and will land, every time you open your fc! no biggie though.) your fc isn't a sterile environment, nor does it have to be.
might want to rinse and boil (or bake in a big tray) every now and then after a couple grows to be on the safe side, otherwise yer fine

i got my incubator finished. I filled it with warm water and set the heater to 80, my thermometer is placed right on top of the jars with a blanket on top then the lid. I'm reading 85 degrees steady right now. is that a little on the warm side? i was thinking of turning it down so it read closer to 80 if possible.

85 isnt bad. might want to back off a few degrees to be safe if the temp is gonna swing around like that on you. remember 86 is ideal, but the jars will be a couple degrees warmer internally because the myc itself generates a little bit of heat... so 82-84 is a good bet.
you're on the right track for sure though, getting it right well in advance of putting anything in it... way to use common sense that so many seem to be lacking

I've got it pretty steady at about 80 right now. seemed to level off after sitting. I'll bump it up a notch and let it sit and see where it it ends up tomorrow.

Hmmm I am setting up an almost identical set up for my first time. I already have perlite but I also have the bubble wands. Which do you all think is easier or better? Like I said the perlite is already here but lava rocks like enesi is using are not hard to come by either.
If I just go ahead with the perlite would I just place the end of the air pumps tubes on top of the perlite? How did you place your tubes as well as your holes for the exiting air Nunbuh Chrubble?

Quick question.
I am sterilizing my jars now. I drilled holes in the lids, then put foil over the top of them. Now do i leave the foil on while they are incubating after i inoculate? Or should i take the foil off?

let cool completely with foil on. inoculate. either cover holes with medical micropore tape, or just simply put the foil loosely back on. you can take the foil or tape, whatever you chose, off once you got some nice size white growing. the verm barrier at the top keeps you safe, the exposed holes are good for gas exchange. see link in my sig for how i do it, i use micropore tape and have a rather nifty trick with it if i do say so myself but just keeping them foiled up until its established and skipping the tape all together is a-o-k too.

that's probably what i'll do then, just set the foil lids loosely over the top until they are ready to come out of the jars thanks!

loosely on top at first - then off all together once they get going or if you notice them stalling... let 'em breathe! again the dry verm on top protects you, technically you dont need anything! the myc finds its way to the top real fast too and colonizes that, making it pretty contam resistant well before the rest of the jar is done. its just nice to use something for peace of mind.

not yet. it's been only 3 days though.
Here's a couple more questions i was wondering about...
*Should i "dunk" them right after birthing the cakes? Or is that only done between flushes?
*About how much time can i expect from harvesting one flush until the next flush is ready? (just trying to get a grasp on timeframes, lol)

dunk before your first flush! do it the easy way: before they're 100% go out and get yourself another set of lids so you got em. wait a day or two after the surface is 100% then open 'em up, scrape off the verm layer, fill the jar up with water, put a new lid on and close it tight, into the fridge it goes for 12-24 hours. drain, roll in dry verm, sprinkle dry verm on top, and make yourself a little pedestal... take that lid without holes and put it in the ring so you got like a little bowl. spray it down so its nice and damp, place your verm covered cake onto it and into the FC it goes. the little "bowl of verm" provides tons of extra moisture, it will pin like crazy around the bottom edges, as well as on the top and sides.
from there its anywhere from 5-14 days for your first pins, 5-7 days to harvest. pick off any big or loose chunks of verm after harvest, put cake back in a jar, and repeat dunk. you'll notice it suck up a LOT more water much quickly this time. the cake might be blue and beat up looking after dunking, but thats fine. put back on a fresh bowl'o'verm and the cake will rejuvenate, the pins will come back (have seen them return in as little as 12 hours!) usually takes a little longer, but not as long as the initial pinset, just a matter of a day or two or three. i like to use a 1:10 h202:h20 solution when dunking 2nd flush onward, but dont bother for that initial dunk.
repeat until cake is spent and enjoy.

I like the idea of just filling the jars with water, But i'm not sure what you mean by making a little bowl for the cakes. With this pod i under the impression that it's best to just set the cakes directly on the rock, so that they suck up the moisture directly. If they are sitting on lids, that won't be of much use.

rock lid inside lid little bowl of moist vermiculite cake on top of the moist vermiculite slowly absorbing water (cake on top of rock would absorb too much water I suppose)
that's what I gathered from creamcorns post.

well today I have 10 of 12 jars with signs of growth. Not bad for only 4 days in. I was expecting to be about a week before i seen anything.
The last 2 jars that are lagging look like the substrate settled and are more compacted then the rest. so i would imagine those will take a little longer.

This jar seems to have the most growth of the bunch

And here they are staying warm in the incubator...I keep the thermometer sensor on top of the very middle jar, then cover it with a blanket and the lid. The temp is steady between 82.9 and 84.2(depending on outdoor temp)that leaves a few degrees for the heat in the jars themselves. I also think the black interior helps a lot to conserve the heat.

They are really truckin' right along now!! The 3 jars that settled and are packed a little more tightly are just barely showing any growth up near the verm layer, i imagine those will take FOREVER, i may not wait on them.
The rest are all doing very well, i'm pleased so far.

As a first timer, i must say it's been a LOT easier then i ever imagined. I would have never thought it would be this simple to grow them. Had i known, i would have started years ago!! lol

Hey, been following along, your grow looks great... good equipment, out of the 4 spore syringes you got, which strain did you end up going with? And out of the 4 syringes you got and trying to inoculate 12 jars, how much of the syringes were used (how much do you have left)?

Thanks!! I'm just posting mainly because it helps me keep track of the dates and time it takes for each step, but you're more then welcome to to follow along with my noobie grow, lol.
I used the puerto rican strain first. 1 syringe did all 12 jars, sporeworks syringes come with 12cc's, so i used 1 cc per jar.(1/4 per hole) which is one line on the syringe.

Ok, it's been 10 days so far and i've got 4 or 5 jars that are VERY close to being fully covered. the 3 jars that were packed down still only show a few white blobs, the remaining jars have considerable growth, but have not yet covered the bottom of the jar.
quick question...do you wait for pins to start appearing before you birth the cake?
(almost ready jars look like this all the way around)

(Partial jars are this far along, the 4 inoc. points have not yet connected)

let the jar colonize 100%
next wait 3-4 more days for the inside to colonize 100%
then birth the cake and either crumble and spawn or dunk and roll

I got my first cake dunking now. I had a little bit if mycelium that had colonized the verm layer on top....is that pretty normal? I just put the chunks on the lid and stuck them in my FC, ya never know, a mushie might just pop out! lol

well today while i was at work, my upstairs got HOT, like 85+ up there in the fruiting chamber. I forgot to turn on my upstairs AC i guess.
Anyway, a little trick i used to drop the temp down in the FC was to put ice cubes in it! I put two trays, just scattered about and the temp dropped from 86 to 78 in about 5-10 minutes. plus when they melt it tops off the water level, lol.
I'll have a few more pictures to post here shortly

Here are some pictures of the dunking process....
The pitcher I am using is of your normal kool-aid type

I fashioned a little foil thing to hold the cake under the water since they float.

here is the cake after it's been dunked.(12-24hrs)

And then rolling it in some dry verm before placing into the chamber

Since I've only got 3-4 cakes ready for birthing, i'm just doing one at a time dunking them for about 14hrs each.

Liquid Culture You can convert a single syringe into 1000 ml of living mycelium with this. It can also "save you the trouble" of multiple printing and speed up colonization time (no germination needed). Here the basic : http://www.shroomery.org/index.php/par/8005

Here is a pic of my cakes in the FC.

I can't seem to get the humidity up very high though. My walls and lid are bone dry still. It gets warmer during the day then at night, around 80 degrees in the day and 70 or so at night, is that the cause of the humidity not wanting to get very high?

ok, i moved the FC to underneath my house (kind of a basement/crawl) lol. It's about 65 down there and i've already noticed a HUGE increase in humidity inside the chamber.

Alrighty, here is the chamber in it's new home down in the "dungeon" lol. We have sort of a basement/crawlspace, pretty much just the water heater down there, and a small area to walk around, the rest is open crawlspace. very damp, and very cool down there.

As you can see, no problem with keeping humidity up down there. The temp is at a steady 69 degrees with the light on. The lamp is just a clamp light from walmart, with a 150 watt bulb. Without it on, the temp drops to around 64-65. So i leave it on all the time to keep the temp closer to 70.
No sign of pins yet, although i do notice the mycelium is getting fuzzy. Being outside the confines of the glass jar is letting it grow outwards.

The aluminum foil dunk is quite clever indeed. Awesome first setup. I can't wait to see what happens.

Maybe you should have just set them on a lid of moist verm.

I am following the tek, which stated to place the cakes directly on the rocks.
They do get a little condesation from so much hummidty at night when the temp drops. that's the water droplets you see. during the day the temp rises a bit and that goes away.

Maybe its just me, but it looks like you got a contam. Please correct me if I am wrong. Plus, the cake looks soaked! Once again, thats MHO.

way too wet, I am with holesnype, go and check out the contam forum. I haven't seen that brown stuff on cakes before. Don't know if it is a contam but it is something to look into.

I had an orange contamed cake once, better watch it. Also, damp basements are great places for mold. You should think about misting with a hydrogen peroxide solution before they start pinning maybe.

does anyone have any idea what would be causing this to take so long? I've got minimal rhiz. growth and only ONE pin so far.
It's been about three weeks now since the first cake was put into the fruiting chamber.
Only thing i can think of is that i birthed a little to early and the cakes weren't colozied in the middle or something...but that's my only conclusion i could come up with.

Well, after learning about contams and sterility the hard way (lol) I am back on track!!
I've got 9 PF jars currently in the incubator. I inoculated them using an LC of B+, and put in 4 cc's per jar of LC.
Here are some pictures.
This was the next evening after inoculation

And this was five days after inoculation

LC rocks, so much easier and better then using spores. lol.
