you can get a small bag of lava rocks at lowes in the outdoor garden area right by the mulch and other bagged goods.
perlite you can get from any nursury or landscape place.

Quick question.
I am sterilizing my jars now. I drilled holes in the lids, then put foil over the top of them. Now do i leave the foil on while they are incubating after i inoculate? Or should i take the foil off?

let cool completely with foil on. inoculate. either cover holes with medical micropore tape, or just simply put the foil loosely back on. you can take the foil or tape, whatever you chose, off once you got some nice size white growing. the verm barrier at the top keeps you safe, the exposed holes are good for gas exchange. see link in my sig for how i do it, i use micropore tape and have a rather nifty trick with it if i do say so myself but just keeping them foiled up until its established and skipping the tape all together is a-o-k too.

that's probably what i'll do then, just set the foil lids loosely over the top until they are ready to come out of the jars thanks!

loosely on top at first - then off all together once they get going or if you notice them stalling... let 'em breathe! again the dry verm on top protects you, technically you dont need anything! the myc finds its way to the top real fast too and colonizes that, making it pretty contam resistant well before the rest of the jar is done. its just nice to use something for peace of mind.

ok..took me three times to sterelize my jars (pot only holds 4 at a time!) And i've finally inoculated them and put them in my incubator. Can't wait to see how it comes out (hopefully healthy, lol)

not yet. it's been only 3 days though.
Here's a couple more questions i was wondering about...
*Should i "dunk" them right after birthing the cakes? Or is that only done between flushes?
*About how much time can i expect from harvesting one flush until the next flush is ready? (just trying to get a grasp on timeframes, lol)

dunk before your first flush! do it the easy way: before they're 100% go out and get yourself another set of lids so you got em. wait a day or two after the surface is 100% then open 'em up, scrape off the verm layer, fill the jar up with water, put a new lid on and close it tight, into the fridge it goes for 12-24 hours. drain, roll in dry verm, sprinkle dry verm on top, and make yourself a little pedestal... take that lid without holes and put it in the ring so you got like a little bowl. spray it down so its nice and damp, place your verm covered cake onto it and into the FC it goes. the little "bowl of verm" provides tons of extra moisture, it will pin like crazy around the bottom edges, as well as on the top and sides.
from there its anywhere from 5-14 days for your first pins, 5-7 days to harvest. pick off any big or loose chunks of verm after harvest, put cake back in a jar, and repeat dunk. you'll notice it suck up a LOT more water much quickly this time. the cake might be blue and beat up looking after dunking, but thats fine. put back on a fresh bowl'o'verm and the cake will rejuvenate, the pins will come back (have seen them return in as little as 12 hours!) usually takes a little longer, but not as long as the initial pinset, just a matter of a day or two or three. i like to use a 1:10 h202:h20 solution when dunking 2nd flush onward, but dont bother for that initial dunk.
repeat until cake is spent and enjoy.

I like the idea of just filling the jars with water, But i'm not sure what you mean by making a little bowl for the cakes. With this pod i under the impression that it's best to just set the cakes directly on the rock, so that they suck up the moisture directly. If they are sitting on lids, that won't be of much use.

rock lid inside lid little bowl of moist vermiculite cake on top of the moist vermiculite slowly absorbing water (cake on top of rock would absorb too much water I suppose)
that's what I gathered from creamcorns post.

well today I have 10 of 12 jars with signs of growth. Not bad for only 4 days in. I was expecting to be about a week before i seen anything.
The last 2 jars that are lagging look like the substrate settled and are more compacted then the rest. so i would imagine those will take a little longer.
