My friend found these, so I dont have all the details. In fact, I am not even confident that they are shrooms, but they at least feel like them.
Found in a pasture. Soil or cow dung. No gills as far as I can tell. No stem, maybe tore off? Cap is 2-3in wide, about the same length in its height, spongy, idk if it has spores Cant detect a scent.

someone just informed me that these are puffball mushrooms. when i squeeze them dust floats about, he said that those are spores.
with google i figured out it is part of the Lycoperdaceae family. still unsure of the species.

*Caution I have minimal expirience so wait for more informed hunters to come along* It dosn't look like a puff ball to me. Looks more like a old bolets or if it is more firm some kind of polypore.

yeah they dont really look like puffballs.. around by me the puffballs get about a foot in diameter sometimes larger.. and its really early for them (up here in NY atleast) from my experience.. They also taste great when fresh (still white) and fried up in a beer batter type deal. My grandfathers recipe..

The images you have posted could be puff balls. If you were to turn one of those objects over would the other side look pretty much the same? The dust portion of your post would certainly be indicative of this variety of fungi. Not all puff ball species grow to the large basketball sized proportions? and florida is of course going to produce much earlier than new york? not all of the mushrooms referred to as puff balls are edible? what you have found is well beyond the edible stage anyway. georgem

george, as you can kinda see in the last pic, one side is relatively flat and the other dome-shaped. anyway, it is no big deal, just curious. i need to start learning this stuff
