Hypae Apperance. Now what?
    #554790 - 02/17/02 09:10 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

It's been about 4 days since innoculation and I'm seeing some nice patches of hypae forming. Some of the jars are looking a little dry. I stuck filter disks on all the jars and placed them in a rubbermaid box lined with a layer of perlite and water at the bottom. My hygrometer/temperature reading is 73F and about 93% humidity. Does this setup need some improvement? I've tried getting the temp up, but that's the best I can do right now. Also, does anyone out there add gypsum to their grain? What does gypsum do other than add Mg and Ca without raising/lowering pH? Can someone give me their formula for rye grain? I'd appreciate the help.

Your temp needs to be higher upper 80's- low 90's. Humidity not that important when jars are incubating. Upper temps and a nice dark place to grow.........mmmmmm. Gypsum helps keep the grain from sticking together.
Quart jar Baby Bear uses 1 cup Rye 3/4-2/3 cup water give or take and just a dash of gypsum.
Read, Read, Read there is more advise out there than you can ever read.

Thanks for the information. I'll head over to K-Mart and pick up a heating pad, even though I'm pretty broke. Thanks again Papa Bear.
