Illegal Ferrari Film
#5547698 - 04/23/06 02:52 PM (17 years, 9 months ago) |
|
|
On an August morning in 1978, French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris. The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes; the course was from Porte Dauphine, through the Louvre, to the Basilica of Sacre Coeur.
No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.
The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.
Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

In some of the videos, they have a camera on the speedometer. Also you can infer the speed from the rest of the traffic. It's speedy The fastest I've seen him go was on a Suzuki GSXR1300 Hayabusa, 336kph (210mph)

Hrm, if you knew the distance between the lines drawn on paris roads and how high the camera is off the ground, you could get a close calculation and animate it in the film.
I'll jump right on that...

You can get a good idea of how fast he's going especially around the 3:55+ range by observing how fast he's passing all those huge buildings in the periphery. And that was smack dab in the middle of the city.

yeah i know he's going obscenely fast... i would just like to know exactly how fast...
he couldn't have done this at a later hour of the day, though... even 1 hour later those streets would have been insanely crowded... especially if you take into consideration that in agaust the sun rises at around 5:00am ... and that was clearly shot at sunrise...
edit: it's impressive nonetheless!!!

Ya man, that was definitely done at about 5 in the morning, when Paris is still waking up. I doubt it would be possible to do this again today since there are many more cars now. That was definitely some cool stuff though, the fastest visit of paris' monuments ever. I loved how he ended with the best view of paris you can get, at the Sacr? Coeur...This dude totally owned the city.
