Windows
    #5547081 - 04/23/06 10:56 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I was going to put linux on my computer for the first time this weekend. So i burned everything that i want to keep from windows onto dvd's so incase i don't like linux i can reload windows, and put my stuff back on it. (This will be my first time useing linux)

The problem lies here, I lost my windows install disc and serial #. I wanted to have it incase i didn't like linux, and wanted to put windows back on my comp.

Is there a way to get another windows install disc? and a way to get my serial # for it? I don't want to just drop windows, and then later be like "Oh fuck, i can't put windows on my computer and I can't figure out Linux"

google dual boot setup, it would probably be the best to start out with, and you wouldnt even have to uninstall your windows.

peace

I wanted to use Unbuntu for my first time but it sounds like Gijith had problems using a dual boost for Ubuntu and windows.

If you want your windows CD back, just pirate another one.

Go d/l a disk (make it a corporate install) and bam, you have a S/N and a disk.

setting up a dual boot is pretty easy.
follow these instructions exactly: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WindowsDualBootHowTo?highlight=%28boot%29%7C%28dual%29

gijth seemed to have a corrupted grub configuration file or something. not a problem with dual-booting so much because every linux installation has grub or lilo or some sort of other boot loader.

I believe you can illegally download a copy of XP or 2000 or whatever version of windows you want. As for serial numbers, look for a sticker on the back of your case (or underneath, wherever).

and when it says create a swap partition, is that just creating a partition and calling it swap? or is it a specific kind of partition?

I mean the activation code or whatever you need to run windows.

Which version of Windows do you use? Downloading and installing a copied version of Windows 2000 is trivial - there is no activation mechanism, so any serial number will work just fine.

Downloading and running Windows XP is more difficult - the activation procedure involves another layer of complexity. There are a few options:

Use a copied normal version of a conventional Windows XP disc and serial number. Use an activation crack. Windows should run normally, but the latest non-security related updates will not download. You can either do without them, or download them from an alternative download source.

Use copied a corporate version of Windows XP. These versions were originally licensed to large companies, with thousands of terminals using the same serial number. Windows should activate proplerly, and behave like a legally purchased copy of Windows. However, occasionally Microsoft will black-list corporate licenses that have been illegally copied. If this happens, non-security related updates will not download. You can either do without them, or download them from an alternative download source.

Use a copied educational version of Windows XP. This is probably the most acceptable option. These versions were originally licensed to schools and universities, with hundreds or thousands of terminals using the same serial number. Windows should activate properly, and behave like a legally purchased copy of Windows. Additionally, this version will not be a "coroporate version", but will be identical to a normal domestic version of windows. However, occasionally Microsoft will black-list educational licenses that have been illegally copied (although this happens less frequently than with corporate licenses). If this happens, non-security related updates will not download. You can either do without them, or download them from an alternative download source.

Extract them. I assume that they're named something.r00, something.r01, something.r02 ?

You should extract the archive with the lowest number (.r00 or .r01) and all the parts should automatically extract into the ISO

My comp. refuses to let me boot my Unbuntu Boot disc. or my Unbuntu System Recovery Disc.

I tried to manually boot by pressing F10 at start up, then i select CD-ROM and it just boots windows again.

I am using Microsoft Windows XP

Do you still have Windows installed and working?

If so, go to Start>Control Panel>System. The serial/code that you need should be there.

But if you are downloading the corp version, then you're probably going to need a different one.
