The subject pretty much says it.. how many quart jars can you do with a pound of rye (thats approximately a half kilo for the non-americans on here
After suffering with the worlds worst PC, my new one finally came today, and I'm looking forward to being able to do some nice quart sized jars!

Let's see here. On average I get 12 quart jars out of 5 LBS. of rye, so you can expect to get 2.43 quart jars per pound of rye.

I forgot to add that my measurement is for jars about 1/2 full. My preference is 1/2 full, some people like to go 3/4. If you're going for 3/4 full, you'll get <2 jars to the pound.

one more quick question.. do you soak and simmer your rye or just soak it for a while?
The only grain I have done is popcorn, really looking forward to getting rye. Hopefully the healthfood store around the corner has it =)

I soak for 24 hours, then simmer for 30 minutes. Let it drain covered for 10-20 minutes covered, while stirring occasionally. Finally, load into jars and pressure cook for 90 minutes. Works perfect for me, but rye can really screw you up if not careful.
Are you planning on using this for spawning to bulk? I'd suggest WBS, much easier and gentler on the wallet by far.

I was going to try casing some, and using the other to spawn some straw. I wanted to compare the differences.
I'm not too worried about the $$, I am only going to do like 7 quarts.

I bought a 25lb bag of rye berries. I made 27 quart jars. My jars were filled more than everyone else reccomends with about 1.5" free up top (PLENTY of shaking room as its colonizing!)... I used about 15-18lbs of rye
