Drilling holes in FC (leaving town)
    #5543028 - 04/22/06 01:36 AM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I will be leaving town for 4 days next week, and was wondering about drilling holes in my Rubbermaid FC for fresh air. Right now my cakes are about 3 days old and I have been manually fanning the cakes with cardboard 3-4 times per day. I will be gone 4 days, will drilling a few holes in the container be okay to allow for FAE. I have wet perlite on the bottom, so the humidity should be okay.

Now, a few questions: 1) where should the holes be located (the lid, top of container, or bottom or container)
and 2) how big? 3) how many holes? 4) and should I put some surgical tape (or a bandaid) over the holes to prevent bacteria from entering?

thanks!

i would put a few near the bottom (2 either side) to help get rid of co2 which is heavier than air, also stuff ya holes with polyfil or i suppose micropore tape would work also. A few holes near the top wouldnt hurt either, chek the monotub tek, c how they do their hole placement ok .GL.

You can just put the lid on at an agle so air can get in and out around the edges. There is no reason to worry about contaminants in your fresh air supply, because your cakes are already colonized. Stale air is much more of a threat than contaminated air.
