Galangale (Thai Ginger)

Wanted to share my recent discovery....
Here's Erowid's stuff on it http://www.erowid.org/herbs/galangal/
Apparantly it is popular in Guniea, and psychoactive effects are known about in SE Asia.
Tea made with 40g chopped fresh root, water just off boil, steeped for 10 minutes. Tastes very spicy, but quite palatable.
T+5 - Feeling a little tingly, light and relaxed. Bit like poppy tea with no heaviness. T+10 - Kind of giggly, mild euphoria, want to smile a lot. Definately feeling mild psychedelic effects, not dissimilar to a very low dose LSD trip, though no visuals. Incease in tactile sensation. T+30 - Just relaxed now, euphoria's worn off, though still mildly tactile. Feel a bit like i've had a drink or two. Mild tracers from TV in a dark room. T+45 - Some prickly heat sensation, and short mild headache sensations. Still quite relaxed and calm. Some CEV, dark blues and greens, interwoven non-symetrical patterns. T+1.15 - Bed time! Get to sleep fine, although have had many more memorable and lucid dreams than usual. Again a bit like following acid.
Anyone else tried this one? It is readily available in Asian Supermarkets, and is as cheap as normal ginger....

yes I have tried it and I have been trying to get ahold of this specie so i can cultivate this specie themself. i never got a trip from it nor any visuals but it was defently an euphoric drug, it came in waves and short lasting.

Apparantly you can cultivate it in the same manner as normal ginger. The only fresh stuff i can find is peeled though - do people think this will make any difference, as i've only ever grown ginger with the skin on. I think i'll try anyway....
I've also found that the Russians use it to spice vodka, and that the dried ground spice can be used as a snuff. It used to be used to 'fire-up Arabian horses too. It's also good for the digestion and body odour.Interesting stuff!

I've planted some, so we'll see how it goes. I've also tried it a couple more times, and have had similar effects.
If anyone is having serious difficulty locating this i don't mind getting some and sending it for trades. Any asain market should have it though. However I'm in the UK, so freshness may be an issue. Just PM me.

I haven't got seeds, and don't actually know if it sets seeds naturally. It's propogated through root division same as regular ginger. If it does have seeds i'm sure online stores will sell it.
The stuff i've got is fresh root. I thought it was peeled, but i think has been scrapped or machine washed. It was in little labelled plastic bags in the refridgerated section.
Just ask at the asian store for fresh galangal or thai ginger and they'll know what you want. As for photos google should have plenty of em. It looks a little like ginger, but the flesh is whiter and much woodier, and the outerskin is lighter (but darker in creases and woody growth)and less papery. This is a very common SE Asian spice, not anything esoteric, so shouldn't be too hard to track down. In the UK there's an online herb and spice vendor that delivers it, so maybe in the states too?
I gave some to friend who followed my instructions, but got nothing from it. Only difference was he was smoking a J at the time, so maybe didn't feel it? Horses for courses i guess.....
