Opaque grow chamber?

I have a question regarding grow chambers. Will my PF cakes develop correctly if I use a grow chamber that is opaque (solid color), rather than a clear chamber? The last time I did PF cakes, I used a clear chamber and it worked fine even though I had a solid colored blanket covering the chamber most of the time. Do the cakes really need light? If they do need light, how can I make this work using a solid colored chamber? Could I just give them a little bit of light each day or what? Thanks.

I've read through that, but I was just asking more for first-hand accounts and opinions than information from an FAQ.

My assumption is that about 3 hours of light is optimal, but it does not have to be sunlight. It can be fluorescent. I'm just curious if anyone has cultivated without applying the said amount of light.

Light, humidity, and a drop in temperature are all needed to tell the mycelia network it is time to change gears from colonization to fruiting stages. Even invitro grows (where the cake is not birthed but instead mushrooms grown inside the PF style jars) require light to initiate the fruiting stage. 3 hours of light is horrendously low. 12 on 12 off is considered optimal as you would know if you had done as suggested and read.
It would be best if you started with a simple tek and stick to it. If time space or even having a setup are your issues re-evaluate everything you are planning and possibly consider sclerotia or invitro next time. If time and money and a set up are not your troubles, take your your opaque tub, and as suggested cut a hole in the top, go to a home depot or similar store and buy a floodlight hood and a 30-40 watt coiled bulb light with a clamp. Pop em in your closet and turn em on and off as needed.
Reading on this site is more invaluable than the first hand experience of a dozen of most of us, as the FAQ is the first hand words of hundreds of us.
