Poisonous identification help

i've recently been doing research on mushrooms for one of my classes using a program which classifies data. I have a huge sample and to sum it up the program has been identifying the odor of a mushroom as a main identification to weither or not a mushroom is poisonous or not. It is calculating that with odor alone you could identify a mushroom as poisonous or not with a 98 percent confidence. I was just wondering if anyone could back this up or is this coincidental thanks

Odor of what precisely?
Your software sounds bunk. For instance, Calocybe gambosa (choice edible) smells of meal but so does Clitocybe dealbata (Toxic).

yea bro mad sketch, identification by odor sounds extremly unsafe. the only drastic identification advice that i had ever read was in a military survival guide, i forgot the name of the author but it says the best way to see a mushroom is poisonous is to fast for 8 hours, than place the mushroom inbetween your elbow and lock it there for about 30 minutes or an hour i believe it was, than check and if a rash is present it is poisonous. just information i read, but maybe you can re-arrange your hypothesis or thesis or whatever your rocking booze

Odor is difficult to convey with words... if you are talking about some kind of objective chemical analysis of gasses being emitted from samples of fungi, utilizing a device other than a nose capable of such assessments, then perhaps you are on to something. But I wouldn't trust my olfactory senses or those of anyone/anything else with ensuring the future of my life and liver. georgem

Most mushrooms have little or no odor. The most common actual odor is mealy, which includes a lot of poisonous and nonpoisonous mushrooms. Odor is useful for identification because when they have one it's often distinctive.
A simple tip on determining what mushrooms are edible or poisonous is that there are almost no simple tips that actually work.
The best one I know of only works in North America for boletes. All North American bolete species that are poisonous bruise blue, have red or orange tubes or tube mouths, or both. So any bolete found in North America that has neither of these features is guaranteed to not be poisonous. It may still be inedible due to texture or flavor. For this exact reason the boletes are often regarded as one of the best groups of mushrooms for beginning mushroom hunters.
Happy mushrooming!

Use a fractional distillation to make an assumption.

Where did you come up with a figure like 98%? What kind of program are you using to classify data? Sounds like a strange theory.
I was always believe that there is no single universal characteristic that can prove if something is poisonous or not. The only way to be sure is to go through the identification process. Even then a lot of species have never been eaten (or at least not that went documented).
