S.A Subaeruginosa (April 2006)
    #5539889 - 04/21/06 01:10 AM (17 years, 10 months ago)

Went for a hunt today, saw lots of amanitas, gymnopilus, boletus, lactarias, as theres been a bit of rain out. Only found a few subs in one spot that retains moisture very well. Next decent rainfall we get the season should kick in. I had some habitat shots but they got deleted along with the rest of my photos, which is a real bitch.

Anyway to start off:

This is my first sub find of the season. It's the one with the biggest cap and stem in OOISI's photo (3rd from left).

found in a pine forest about 40-50km north of Adelaide.

Omg they are awesome specimens. Makes me very jealous. The weather here in melbourne has been absolutely shithouse which is obviously a good thing so hopefully i can show some of my finds sooner rather than later.

hey thanks for the compliments everyone. we are just happy to be finally finding subs again. btw that sounds like a good idea yt if el duderino wants to that is, i live further south now so I wouldnt mind going hunting and finding some patches in the deep south. anyway me and ooisi went for another hunt today, this time south-east in the lofty area. we weren't expecting to find anything but when were checking out some woodchips that used to have strophs on them we found some of these ...

Checked my patches today (Melbourne) and they are looking identical to those photos tryp. Pinning all over. No significant fruits as yet but its looking very promising.

On another board (bluelight.nu) a fellow melbournian has had some awesome finds. Im not sure if this person is a member of this board or if some of you post at bluelight but this is a pic of this blokes finds today.

Nice haul some quite large subs there, how much rain has melborune got?. 40 mm of rain or so brought up a few pins at this patch. Nothing worth picking though, but it looks like a potential healthy patch, as long as those damn rapers dont get into it. Hopefully we get more fronts tomorrow, to keep everything moist.

It has been raining on and off for the past 2 days. Melbourne weather as most of you probably know is fucked. It will absolutely piss down for about 2 hours then it will be blue sky for the rest of the day. But yeah, we have had alot of rain so i reckon its kickstarted the season.

Nice finds OOISI
They look just like the ones I find here in NZ, the patches I know of here havn't started to fruit yet though, I find the affect of the P.aucklandii much nicer than P.subaeruginosa, a couple of friends feel the same way. Heres some subs from a while ago!

Hopefully get some good sub pics soon

Inski nice subs, what substrate are they from? and what do you mean by you get nicer effects from aucklandii, less nausea?

Only two places had fruits and we didnt get any rain for 5-6 days since the original front that triggered the first fruits so its still a bit dry. Anyway these shots are from anzac day.

Hi OOISI
Those subs were on woodchips like your's, yeah me and some others have noticed alot less nausea from what i'm pretty sure are aucklandii and they are more visual.
Heres a pic!

Yeah i saw that pic in your thread + many others . They look quite different too sheepishs his were from pine i think. Do you know what plant/tree those aucklandii are near?

As for the SA heads we finally got some rain after that week of dryness. Hopefully it was enough to trigger more pinners.

Hi OOISI, yeah some look different some very similar after comparison to his excellent pics in the pine forest. After reading Johnston and Buchanan's article, The genus Psilocybe (Agaricales) in New Zealand, and comparing their drawings of spores and cystidia and measurements with micro pics from my finds everything leads to aucklandii
The tree is Lophomyrtus bullata, I don't think these mushrooms have a symbiotic relationship with any plant or tree because the tree was in a pot and it died, but they continue to fruit!!!
Happy hunting
inski.

Excellent good to know the season is very fucking nigh!
I'm incredibly jealous of both melbournians & new zealanders. This thread is for SA pics yeah?

I was meant to go hunting today but that didn't happen. I hope it keeps on raining. Looking promising, maybe just wishful thinking. Ah I can't wait!

Congrats on the finds guys. April. That's like a record yeah? Keep up the good work, & keep us posted!

Hopefully will make a trip into the lofty region during the week to scope some Amanitas and a few sub patches, will let y'all know how it goes

Do you ever get big wavy cap subs like we do in Melb?

thanks yt and notorious! yt - i probably don't have to tell you this but at Lofty only harvest the mature ones, because we been there twice over two weeks and they still didn't open their cap's fully. And so far they are confined to a very small area. goodluck on your hunt :mushroom2: and have a good time .

notorious - yeah I like the yellow/orange capped subs we get in the north much better than the regular brown ones. We do get brown capped ones in other area's, they go wavvy but not as often as in Melbourne I suspect. OOISI once found an 8cm diameter wavvy capped sub, but the stems of our subs is usually thinner.

It was a good monday today on the 1st of May. I was out and about at a suburb close to adelaide city centre and decided to check some woodchip patches. Found some psathyrellas, after a little more scoping some nice looking stopharia aurantiaca caught my eye and to my surprise was some subaeruginosa dwelling in the shade close by. Virtually all huntings done in the hills here and ive done many hours of walking around in the suburbs with no luck, so this is quite an acheivment for me. Anyway enough chitchat heres some shots:

Took some more photos from the suburb patch today. Lots of them are still pins, but theres more pins since last time. Some mushrooms were drying out as the woodchips are losing moisture. I hope some rain gets it remoistened soon.

SA subs are weird - often so much lighter colour in the cap than the average victorian subs.

finally home after a very long hunt, took about six hours. most of the time was spent travelling to nearly every location we know (some of which were pretty far from each other) and some time checking new areas as well. overall not that much luck, only 1 new place started fruiting. found less then 20 ok size matures, about 3-5cm caps, and i started printing all of them for those id promised prints for. could only get one photo from the north because at about 3:30 it was too dark to take visible photos. so heres the pics

more to come

Funny you should say that. I hunt north west of Melbourne and have often thought how dark the subs are Shroomkma & co are posting. Where I'm at, they are lighter....In fact, until I saw the posts here, I would probably have walked right on past most of them.

Must post some photos, I have some from this season on film in camera. Will post when developed.

Happy harvesting trixxy, finally some other SA hunters posting there finds. This year seems like its gonna be better than previous two years (above average rainfall), so keep an eye out. Hey bluemeanie check the second page (if your logged in or 4th if your not) and the pics from the suburb patch look more like melbourne subs i think. Stems are more white (ie no mottling or not dirty) and the caps have darker colours brown and red. Do you think thats more typical of Vic/Melbourne subs?

One of the patches visited had a bad case of caps eaten from stems, straight from the ground. Its happened there before, my largest caespitose fruiting there was devoured plus many soliatairy and gregarious fruitings were intaken. There also was small diggings in the mycelium too. Possibly a or many marsupials got into the patch.

Hey, first post here!

I've never looked for shrooms in my life, and are trying to pick up on the kind of place to look. I've gathered wet places in eucalypt areas from most people. Hows say.. somewhere along the oonkaparinga? And will they be p. subbs? Or something else to look for?

:mushroom2: Made a nice drive out to the North-East hills region first patch we checked has started nicely found around 25 mature subs and alot of small patches with pins looking very promising in the upcoming weeks, also alot of Amanitas in that region aswell looking uber funky. Checked another 2 patches both bare looked a lil dry tho maybe a few more weeks and a good saturation to get things going really well. One spot is fairly well know and we have never found anything there but will continue to look you neva know  . Next few weeks should really get things kicking along nicely hopefully scout a few more places out also will let you all know how its goin

This morning, was pretty dry, as you can see by the pictures, 1 patch was still pretty wet though.

Young Tripper, took these ones this morning also, lost a fair bit of quality on making them smaller pictures, may be what you're after.

nice photos trixxy :mushroom2: thanks for sharing  its always good to see other SA'ers finds. the general habitat around your subs looks kinda familiar, but most of the south-east hills areas prbably look alike.

Just came back from a hunt with el_d and yt. Combined, we got a total of about 60 which is good for this time of year. The same time last year subs werent even found yet. So here are the photos

Keep the pics comin' trixxy, the habitat you pic at is mainly grasses. Do you get any on woody debris like eucalypt foilage?

hey Young tripper i was watering the patch every day cause they were in the sun. The patch is not fruiting now though, governement workers cut brances and they fell on it flung myc up an shit, it was very dry anyway the myc dryed out prior. Oh yeah and 300 subs, very very nice haul, what substrate?

Edit: These pics are from the 29th of April

 Nice pics Amigos, that sux to hear about your sub-urban patch OOISI. The substrate for the big haul was quite varied and as was situated in a largish area mostly Eucalypt bark/leaf, Moss, Rank grass, and bracken scrub defiantly alot more found on Eucalypt mulch this year then last which is interesting and a good sign i would say. does anyone know what the rainfall has been like in the Hills region?

Rainfall in the central hills / lofty region = sweet fuck all. maybe 2 nights with rainy/drizzle since that big downfall 3 weeks ago, nothing to bring on newer flushes. But very frosty frosty nights, pity its getting dry again.

BM aren't white margins typical in Vic? good to see your a mod now. Pins are drying out, because of lack of rain still quite a few fresh mushrooms out there. Still looks like there has been fruits in the last couple days in some areas, despite the rainfall shortage.

so we headed out early today on a very long hunt. started from south-east then drove up north-east checking key locations. there wasn't much at all in the south-east although it was very cold and wet, there were ice deposits on lofty.

the north-east is where we really found the motherload even though most were fairly dried out, our combined total haul is > 300.

for sure  maybe we can arrange something for this weekend?

so here are the remaining photos from yesterdays hunt in the north-east

these are just a few examples of what we were seeing and cutting all day. there arent too many photos because lighting conditions were bad and many mushies were in positions that made photography difficult.

we also stopped by the local forest cattle trail and I found this little subae-er fruiting right next to some cow dung :mushroom2:

It didnt rain that much, but im not complaining.. more than usual.
The weather is good though, and subs seem to be able to fruit w/o much rain when patches start flushing.

ah shroomkma, there is a difference between Adelaide and Melbourne that you may never understand unless you actually go here. they do not call this the driest state on earth for no reason, our average annual rainfall is only 400mm (melbourne is atleast double). subs do not grow in every park in the suburbs like in melbourne in fact there are nearly no fruitings in the suburbs here. just take my word for it when I say that 1300+ mushrooms is no "half decent haul" for SA, any Adelaide shroomer will tell you that. and since subs are at least 10x easier to get to in Melbourne i would expect you guys to get hauls at least 10x this amount with ease.

so, now the rest of the photos ...

and ...

a couple shroomers in their natural habitat

Word Tryptonite!  :mushroom2: Definatly a great haul for us adeladians alrite a very big long day heh heh, and definatly alot of subs around this season especially compared with the last few years. Shroomka like Tryptonite said SA is alot different then Melb rainfall wise, climate etc and isnt as big as the melb sub production line which you guys make me so jealous with  lol Season is looking Tip Top already cant wait to see how is pans out in the next few weeks.

Went out into the far North-East region today and picked out a nice haul of around 280ish or so a fair few older subs, looked like a few ppl had been there since our last visit and even a few shroomers there when we were, was fairly wetish out there but still could do with alot more id say.

Heh Heh those fiendish shroomers look Vaguely familiar  :stoned:

In my oppinion its not just the temperatures. Melbourne seems to have a lot more favourable substrates and mycelial networks established, plus its colder and has a greater annual rainfall. The climatic conditons are because Melbournes situated approx. 250 km south of Adelaide on a lateral axis. So those factors combined make Melbourne overall better for cold loving, wood lovers ... damn Melbournites!

Hey YT i found another suburban patch, its very small about 10 mushrooms all pinners and mostly bug ridden. Most are drying out but still its great to find another locale. Ill post a couple pictures by the end of the weekend.

Man, i've only just started shroom hunting (In SouthEast Melbourne ie. Dandenong ranges), and i'm jealous already!! All i've found so far is tiny little patchs.. or large areas with a few subs scattered here or there!

I think imma go have a look around at some other places tomorrow, there's bound to be plenty of places, I just must be missing them all!

Psytrancernz there from S.A.(South Australia), subs only grow in Australia and NZ.

Yeah Yt we really do need more rain. April was kick-arse, May was so-so and June has been pretty weak so far. Still after the first flushes the mushrooms just keep comin.

Heres a few pics from the new suburban patch i found which is dry as hell:

And some from woodchip beds in the hills:

:mushroom2: Spent the day down the Flerieu With the SAB crew Hagakure and El duder and had a very successfull day i got a haul of 144 all up, some very nice specimens quite large and meaty.I guestimate the total haul to be anywhere between 500-600ish. I took a few photos like two lol before my batteries died and i then realised i bought the wrong ones haha... i will post what i did take soon.

Happy Hunting

Hi All

Just getting into the scene. A few questions.

1. Why are you guys collecting subs and not Animitas? I thought they were good too?
2. In Adelaide, there has been frost. Is this better or worse for mushrooms?
3. Can you get me started on a few locations in or near Adelaide.

Good to get the first post out of the way.
3. W

nice work yt! good to hear youre having so much luck down south. we only got a few from the SE last hunt, still yet to upload the photos.

Latebloomer, hi and welcome to the shroomery. To answer your questions

1 - actually some of us do collect Amanita muscarias. However they recquire preparation as they can be poisonous if they are not prepared properly. People don't usually collect/eat them because psilocybin containing mushrooms have much more favourable effects. Im assuming this though as I havent tried them (muscarias).

2 - I think frost is bad, but it shouldnt effect things too much. It is the lack of rain that has slowed down fruitings immensly.

3 - Sorry, but us shroomers work hard to find out patches and don't just like to give them away. Though with a bit of research on the internet you will be able to find out locations - J.B Cleland first discovered subs very close to Adelaide. Or you can go through all the pages in this thread I reckon a location or two might have been dropped somewhere.

you will have to do a bit of research so you know the basic identifiable characteristics of subs such as stem, cap, gills, flesh and sporeprint. good luck

 Was checking BOM last nite and looks like some rain hopefully end of week for a few days... i really hope so we need it. Down the Flerieu was a little bit dry the 1st few places we checked but the last patch was very green and moist very suprising.
Latebloomer most of us do collect Amanitas usually at the start of the season very early winter/ late autumn pity i didnt have my camera then or i would have taken some awesome photos. Usually every patch i have been to/ go to for subs there are Amanitas near by but getting into winter u start to see alot less.

Here are the few photos i did take down the Coast

Latebloomer just check the adelaide hills or even adelaidian suburbs, preferably places with prolific rainfall patterns. Make sure your checking in the right substrates.

pm-ed you psilo_cybin.
Didn't have much luck last week. Went towards the Lofty area and despite seeing a few pins and unharvestable mature we got nothing except absolutely fucking drenched. Went undercover and waited over and hour but the rain didnt stop so we had walk about 30-40 mins to the bus stop getting saturated all the way. Next time I think I need some kind of waterproof gear so I can continue to hunt in these hardcore shrooming conditions. I didnt keep any of my photos they weren't worth it, but you can see OOISI's last photos which were from that hunt.
btw - what happened to all the SA shroomers? I remember seeing a lot more posting here last year, not that there is any lack of shroomers in the field though!

Tuesday 18th July Went for a hunt out into the Northern Area, hadnt been out for over 4 weeks to that certain area but was very suprised with the recent cold weather & rain found an excellant haul of 1100 subs  :mushroom2: :mushroom2: :mushroom2:
The patches were still very moist and wet and still producing strong flushes which shall hopefully continue until the end of August. Also hoping to make it down South soon to check  the situation out down there
I have alot of pics from yesterdays hunt VERY image heavy until i figure out how to thumbnail lol enjoy  :mushroom2:

All the specimens i looked at of the SA subs were quite different to the Victorian subs and subs from the rest of Australia and New Zealand. Different as in more different than other subs are from Ps.cyanescens.
