Are your trips over 50 radically different than when you were younger?

you know it is strange... I don't know if I know anybody at that age that is an active tripper. I do however know lots of people in that age range that did regularly trip sometime in thier life.

Swim is Turning 50 this summer:(. When your responsibilty level is higher(wife, kids, house, job)and you have seen a lot more of life, the tendency is to be more cautious with dosage. Swim would be very hesitant if not refuse to take high dosages, especially shrooms which can really dig into your conscious. He may be more risky with mescaline, but that remains to be seen. As far as LSD, SWIM never sees it. When you don't go to festivals and concerts anymore and have to hang with mostly semi-straight peeps, your access is limited. As far as the experience itself, He thinks setting becomes far more important. To really let go, got to be out in nature, camping, backpacking, with the buds who accept that it is still ok to check out of reality for awhile. No way would SWIM ever tell the wife that he delves into altered states, or try to trip around her. She would wonder about his mental state even more so than she already does, but that is what you get with a straight wife. Not that she didn't experiment with drugs when younger herself. The other interesting fact SWIM has noticed is that as times goes by, fewer and fewer women of his generation like to party(other than alcohol)and they seem to discourage exploration. SWIM misses being young and carefree, it definitely makes having fun and letting go less complicated.

I can see myself wanting to trip when I'm older. Just like how Hoffman got his wife to give him a dose of LSD while he died. It must have been an amazing way to leave, a dignified end. If you're older you wouldnt have to worry so much about the negative effects on your health much either - I mean who cares if you lose a point or two of IQ when you're 80.
Getting hold of them when you're older would obviously be a problem as SWIM says. I spose mushies are good in that they can be stealth grown.
I think it would be really nice to sit atop a mountain at 80, looking back and thinking how great life's been, pop a few caps and meld with the universe. If fact - if you guys are still here I'll write up a trip report and tell you how it goes.

If you havent seen it - its awesome. "LSD - the beyond within" I think.

Real 80's, but its a very balanced/scientific documentary, with some funny footage - like soldiers marching while given acid.

Blindlemon, she may trip when you marry her, but what about 10-15 years down the road, after kids. Somehow/sometimes that woman you married decides that tripping is not cool anymore.

Well I havent made it to 50 yet, I,m now 48. I probably only average around 5 trips now a year. For me the 2 differences seem to be that the older I get, the easier it is on the mind. But at the time, it takes my body a couple of days to get back to normal

what do you think of this idea: I never wanted to leave this dimension with tubes up my nose, with doctors or heart monitors. I dont want to fade away in a nursing home. Why do that? No,when i feel my life is winding down, losing my capability to fend for myself,im going into fucking hyperspace man. Im buying the ticket, taking the last great magical cosmic ride deep inside. Astral Suicide is where its at for me.
ANyone know any good ideas bout how to kill yourself with a large amount of hallucinogens? or should i just go deep in the woods, lock myself to a tree, throw away the key,and just keep eating drugs until i die, definaetly good idea to get some heroin or something for this plan.
a god's death,as I see it no sniveling decomposing weasel on a hospital bed. What a shameful denial of natural processes. You were prolly supposed to die of the flu 40 years ago, haha. Do you know how much money is spent keeping near dead people, nearly alive? Thats a costly denial. get over it. Choose your death! You will die! preferably before you get alzheimers and cant even remember who you are.

Yeah guilt does suck when your tripping Blindlemon. Thats why SWIM leaves it for weekend outings with the boys out in the middle of no where. The Mountains of West Virginia are great place to get away from humans. The wife and SWIM have a don't ask don't tell agreement about backpacking trips. She doesn't want to know how crazy it gets.

And with a lot more responsibility, social conditioning, stress from social conditioning and just a lot more general bullshit baggage!
I'm 41 and only tripped twice when I was young (18-20) and both were beautiful, enlightening experiences. I started again last year because I was tired of the way that I had begun to think and therefore act...like a 40 year old!
I needed a new outlook and knew from past experiences that this was a good place to head into. BUT all the shit that has piled up in the last 20 years has to get dismantled and reassembled in some people and unfortunitely it appears that I'm one of them.
Guilt, self image, EGO and assorted other little niceities all come to the forefront and I only do small doses for the meantime after having a GREAT first 2 gram trip and figuring that since it was so nice I'd just go ahead and jump up to three...WRONG! I was not ready for the intensity, had heard about this Ego thing, but didn't quite have a grasp on it. I sure did after that trip!
I'm by no means saying that you shouldn't trip when you're older, but more like don't ever stop if you start out doing it at a younger age and give all the BS a chance to grow like I did. See the light when you're old enough to start tripping and hang on to it!

Careful how you word that, Man! The first thought that popped into my head was "Brokeback Mountain"!

Schapper, i think what you've stated is really important. Hardly anyone will cop to the stuff that you mentioned like EGO and the building up of bullshit that is supposed to be Okay as you get older. In my humble opinion for what it's worth, it's not Okay and this is why people get unhappy I think. For the first time in my life at 50 I work in corporate america and man you don't want to do it if you don't have to. I'm just observing everything and you see so vividly why america looks the way it does today. w00w

I am 51 and I can't really say because when I was younger it was mostly good LSD and now it's always shrooms. One big difference is that I don't drink now and when I was younger when I would trip I would usually drink a lot also. I took several years off completely because I thought I was perma-fried. My thinking was that when you go to court on a drug charge tripping things have gotten out of hand. Now I look at each trip as a special event, the way Huxley et. al. did. I think it's better like that.

now that i am in my 50s, a few trips in a year is a "busy" year, hehheh...
ymmv...
as to how the trips differ--well, i have more experience behind me (fwiw)...

I'm mid-40's. The only time I get to eat shrooms is at night. Some mexicana-a stones at about 8:30...the family goes to bed, and I go to another world. Wake up refreshed (even though don't usually get to sleep until about 3am). Can't do it very often, though. I still love it.
