Newb here trying to gather supplies for the 50/50+ casing.
So what is the difference, if any, between peat moss and sphagnum peat moss? The only thing I can find is canadian sphagnum???
Also, the casing tek says:
15 1/2 cups vermiculite 15 1/2 cups peat moss 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell 1.2 cups of hydrated lime 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water) 16 cups = 1 gallon
But then they recommend using the Cal. Carb. instead, so is it the same "1.2" measurement as the lime? TIA greatly appreciated

I don't know the difference between sphagnum peat moss, and just regular peat moss, but I think they are the same thing... The measurement of the pH adjusters pretty much depends on the initial pH of the materials that need to be adjusted. Different bags will have different values, and require adjusting in different amounts. I personally just dump in Calcium Carbonate until I feel comfortable. I have read that it will not take the pH to dangerously high levels, so I just eyeball it and don't do any tests. If you want to know for sure, just mix it up and test the pH using litmus strips and stop adding carbonate when the pH is around 7.5

i thnk regual stuff is from irland. sphagnum is the highsch quality stuff beucase its is millions of years less old and is a better texture. i read a better post that gave actual data ahha. but the conclusion was the good sphagnum stuff is best. get it before burns bog burns again this summer haha.

Ok got that stuff strait, now is the calcium carbonate that they sell for reptile aquariums the right stuff or do I need the "tech grade" stuff on ebay?
I have the hydrated lime and oyster shells. can I just use those if I get a ph probe and check it?
Thanks again guys, don't wanna screw up
