Casing Pics

I was just wondering is somebody could either post pics or explain in excessive detail what a casing should look like when it is fully colonized and right before pinning.
From what I understand overlay occurs when the surface of the casing becomes colonized. But how can pinning then start if it is not on the surface of the casing? I suppose what I'm asking is to what degree does the surface need to be colonized in order to acheive an ideal pinset?

i have just started but from what I understand you are soposed to put the casing in the fruiting chamber when you see myc poking through evenly across the casing. Just poking through the casing, not covering the entire thing. The myc will continue to grow on the casing days after you put it in the FC. Correct everybody?

You dont want the mycelium to be growing over your casing (overlay). Ideally, you should see only brown casing on top w/ pins poking through. That's why you patch before placing in the FC

mine looks like dirt with a light dusting of snow on it, maybe some fluffy acumulation in some of the valleys, and lotsa little tiny snow pellets, kinda like hail but not icy. -these will become pins. thats the best i can describe hope it helps

this is my first casing but i just noticed pins about an hour ago on this one.

i found that i took mine out a little late(about 2 days) and i had to patch but you should take them out when you see a descent amount of MYC poking through put it in your FC.
 (NOT MY PIC)
because it will continue to grow almost to the point of pinning...
again this is my fist casing i could be wrong...

what did you case with. I am going to try 3 different methods this time just for sake of nothingness
1) 50/50 w/ oyster shell (powerded) no bottom layer 2) 60/40 w/ oyster shell (powerded) no bottom layer 3) 100% verm top / bottom
I want to see how the different flushes are

Even appearance of mycelium on the surface just as you switch from incubating to fruiting conditions. I like to use a 48 hour incubation period with 3/8" casing material.

that is the only problem i have, everyone has a different way from incubation to FC
Are you saying you don't patch?

I don't like to patch, tried it a few times and see very little benefit to it.

I cased using 50/50 peat and vermiculite with oyster shells and some horticultural lime. I also used a bottom casing layer for moisture content. My results thus far (6 days after applying the casing mix) are several spots of mycelium peaking out. Around the second day, some aggressive mycelium was visible so I patched that. Any spots that appeared after that, I chose not to patch. As it stands now (6 days in), I have about 7-8 spots of mycelium visible per terranium and some (minimal) signs of a general colonization. Basically, I can see mycelium in some valleys of the casing mix, but very few. I chose to turn the lights on yesterday since I was worried about overlay (since I wasnt patching the spots anymore) and also about somehow screwing up my yeild due to an uneven pin-set.
So how does one ideally determine the time to trigger pinning then if the mycelium should still be under the dirt? Many say that you wait to see it appearing in many of the valleys of the mix, but doesnt that force you to patch many spots while waiting for a general colonization?

what was your top layer if you don't mind me asking I amlooking for all the help i can get....
But i think i did finally come up with an easy WBS prep
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5539411/an/0/page/0
over the years between my hippie friend and me we came up with this from trial and error (bottom of the page)
I am just afraid it has already been done and i am stealing it and taking the credit for it. If i am i am sorry
