Testing PC'd Jars & FAE Hole Sizes
    #5538881 - 04/20/06 07:16 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

Two questions...

* It occurs to me that a good strategy for PCing jars might be to do them a few weeks in advance of innoc. They'd have a chance to show signs of contamination prior to the knock-up.

I see two potential downfalls of this strategy. First, since I'm PCing the jars, is the most-most-likely source of contam the inoculation procedure itself? Second, since I'll be using WBS, would I be degrading the jars by letting them stand for two weeks?

* I've seen varying theories on the size of polyfill-filled holes for FAE (or is it gas exchange?) in monotubs. 1/2", 3/4" diam, etc.

To put this in perspective my containers are roughly a foot wide, 11" tall and 8" deep. I intend to lay down 0.5" verm, 3.0" substrate material, 0.5" casing. This comes out to:

Code:
      box volume: 1,056 cu/in
substrate volume: 384 cu/in (36%)
shroom area: 670 cu/in (64%)

My gut tells me to drill six 1/2" holes. Two on each 12" side face and one on each of the smaller 8" side.

Thoughts?

well first of all we know a PC will kill contams. you sdon't have to be worried about it not unless you do 15 mins haha.
and yes inoculation is where the contams come in. so theres no point. also your grain will slowly loose water and start to dry out.
