My computer just up and died?
    #5537956 - 04/20/06 02:31 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I don't know what happened, one night it's working perfect, no errors, no viruses, no nothing. The next morning I wake up to go on, and 'Disk Read Error - Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.' and that's all I get. No WinXP load up or anything, just a funny noise from the HD and a black screen with that message.

I don't have a WinXP CD because I bought the computer with it pre-installed, so reinstalling or booting from the CD is impossible. Any suggestions as to how to fix without having to buy a new HD?

What kind of funny noise? Does it sound like any of these?

I,d say try and borrow someone XP cd, to get to the recovery
console, and do a repair, maybe something took out the MBR.
But could be other things like bad IDE cable, or HD.
Good luck.

Sounds like a bad hard drive to me. But first you can try to run chkdsk /r from the recovery console by booting up to your XP cd.

When the splash screen loads when you boot up, is there an option to press a F key for Recovery.... often F10 for HPs for example... usually when your system comes without a Recovery disc, all the recovery information is on a separate partition on the hard drive. If that's the case, try a non destructive rebuild first and see what happens.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Number one without that backround screeching. Just those clicks, and they are more repetetive.

As for the recovery option I've already tried. I try to get to the seperate partition but it tells me 'Disk Failed.'

I'm going to end up forking over the money for an entire new system.

dont by a whole new system unless you NEED to upgrade, that is what a lot of people who dotn know about computers do, it doesnt work so i need a new one, and go out and buy a whole system. Your hard drive went bad is all, you can replace that for 60-150 dollars depending on what size you need

peace
