Casings without incubation
    #5537783 - 04/20/06 01:30 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

A friend of mine is making some casings (WBS, 60/40 verm. coco coir with calcium carbonate, amazonian strain)with an extremely aggressive mycelium that colonized the jars in 7-12 days. Now that the substrate has been cased, 70-90% of the surface shows a very healthy extremely rhizomorphic mycelium --no pins--, (with only 2 day incubation to show 3 or 4 spots in each casing). Though it is not overlayed(yet: no hard, rubbered or yellowing mycelium), my friend is planning to completely cut the incubation fase of the casings in his next batch, this is, to go directly from casing into the fruiting chamber if the mycelium is as aggressive as this one. Do you think there will be any trouble? By the way, the fruiting chamber has perlite, temps at 73, RH at 90 and the air exchange is taken care of with a cool mist humidifier. Thank you in advance.

I've done this many times with excellent results with aggressive substrains and peat based casings so this should work just fine for you. Thick casing layers (1") can often benefit from a day or two incubation though in getting the timing perfect for an optimal pinset.
