fighting contamination!
    #5533238 - 04/19/06 11:16 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

couple questions about contaminations... mean green to be precise.

-if i just remove the infected area with a spoon and hope it doesn't continue spreading will i harm or stunt the growth of the shrooms?

-is putting salt on some of the infected area helpful to dehydrate and kill the mold? do i have to remove the salt after?

-whats the deal with H2O2? does it kill mold? does it kill the shrooms? can i just pour it on?

-how can i get rid of the mold?!? this is my 2nd contamination in a row. i think its because of bad sink water...

please help. i can't stand throwing away all this money.

You can construct a poormans glove box with parts purchased at wallymart for less than 10 dollars.  If you want the plans for this send me a PM and i will give them to you.

First things first, you are probably going to have to toss the casing, but if it makes you feel better to at least try then here is what i would reccomend.

1. Can you remove the infected area:  Yes.  Will that stop the mold from spreading?  Maybe, if you cut an inch or 2 away from the mold itsself and remove it all.  There is at least a semi-decent chance that it will work.

2.  Salt?  Salt used in conjuction with number one will be a better option than any of the two by them selves.  You will just have to realize and cope with the fact that you will most likely not have any mushrooms growing off the portion around where you cut-salted.

3. H2o2?  In large enough quantities, i.e. Pouring it on. This will more than likely kill everything including what you do not wish to kill.  A Small mist of h202 around the infected area would be your best application of H202.

4.  How can you get rid of the mold?  Your overall best option is to take extra measure to ensure that you prevent it before it happens.  Secondly, your next best solution is to remove it and use the measures above as soon as absolutely possible.

The overall best option for eliminating this problem is to case them in the glovebox and leave them in there for as long as possible. At least long enough to get the myc. network working.  Also do a better job steralizing/cleaning your casing ingrediants before they get the myc.

Oh. by the way, if you think you having problems with bad sink water. Then either boil the hell out of it, or use store bought purified water, or buy a  britta type filter and do it yourself.

thanks for the advice. i got rid of most of the mold with a spoon, but it was somewhat spread out in small quantities. im gunna try misting it with h2o2 and hope for the best.
