Water/Electricity ??
    #553645 - 02/16/02 04:22 PM (14 years, 9 months ago)

Do you know what happens when a light bulb get's wet?
I ask because if I had a filing cabinet, and wanted to place a humidifier in the bottom cabinet, and place casings in each other cabinet, and put a light bulb in each cabinet with casing, what might happen to the light bulb. Will the humidity cause a fire or any kind of damage?

You would need a flood light. And a well crafted outlet for these floodlights.
All in all, your askin for trouble.
A standard light will all most certainly be a disater of some sort.
I wouldnt try it.

You are sure? I only ask because the junkyard is having a sale on filing cabinets. I'm glad I only grabbed one, I can go back and get more though, I'm still thinking about it, maybe I can Place the light bulb inside another glass container, and waterproof the cord. What do you think?

you dont need much of a light source.
Drill holes in the side of the cabinet. cut pieces of fiber glass just bigger than the holes and glue em on.
I would not take the chance of putting a light bulb in an envirnment that will be 100% humid.
Do you really want to risk somthin like that in your house man.

Well that sounds good, what do you suggest I drill a hole in a metal cabinet with? The plan was to have different colored lights in each cabinet though, can't really do that with your idea.

Not sure why you would want different color.
As a matter of fact, seems that would be a bad idea for mushrooms.
I know that plants do not respond to green light. Cause they reflect it.
Not sure on mushrooms though.
Mushrooms need very little light. Just enough to stimulate them.
If you can afford it, get a whole saw made for steel doors.
A dremel would prolly be better.
Sawzaw.
Be creative.
To tell ya the truth. If you are going for stealth, I would use a fridge.
If not, I would buy some tupperware.
Ok, Im really going to bed now.

I heard something once about using blue light. Don't remember what, but I am still curious about different shades. The cabinet is good because It was free, 7 feet tall, and has 4 large droors, very space efficient. I really don't want to buy an expensive saw, so I think I wil just place the light bulbs inside a bigger glass jars, and waterproof it. I am going to use red, blue, and regular light. I think I might have a tupperware with real sunlight too. thank you for the tip about green light though, i won't use it.

Drill a hole with a drill, duh! I have drilled many, many holes oin metal objects. A drillpress helps.

I don't have a drill, even if I could find one and borrow one, it would take forever to use a drill in the same fashion of a saw.

this is not advanced.. !!!!

what kind of lightbulb?
standard incandescent lightbulbs will break due to the sudden change in temp if splashed.. regular outlets will short in high humidity.. outdoor rated ones would e fine.. if this is for fungus, as it should be if your asking here, flourescents will be fine.. just use those.. and dont listen to whoever said you need a flood light.. only if you want to bake your caseings...

Get an old outdoor Christmas light string and cut off one lamp socket for each drawer. Wire them up in series and tape/mount them to the back of the cabinet for each drawer. Drill a small hole in the bottom of the cabinet for your humidifier cord and lamp cord. Just use a white outdoor Christmas light in each socket. If they can withstand being outdoors in the winter, they can take the humidity of the cabinet, and there will be plenty of light for the fruiting.

are you serious? are you talking about minature light sets? or the large outdoor bulbs?
i have a huge terrarium, and i strung up a 100 outdoor light set of white bulbs.

Yes, the large outdoor lights... Your 100 bulb string is enough light for a terrarium the size of a 4 car garage.

hehe, sorry for the misinterpretation.
I have a 100light minibulb set of outdoor lights.
I assume even the minilights are enough

I chose these minis, becaue they dont generate as much heat (but at the same time less light) than the big boys.

More than enough... general rule is, if you can see the casing/cakes... there is enough light.
Enjoy
