Experiment with contaminated jar.

Howdy folks... just thought I would report on a little experiment I recently conducted with four contaminated quart jars of P. azurescens spawn on wbs. Upon noticing a bit of suspicious color forming on the top of a few jars I immediately placed them in quarantine for further observation. After a few days it obviously turned out to be a green mold contamination as the top of the wbs was covered with that lamentable green yuckiness... Rather than ditching these as usual, they were opened and given a few squirts of 70% isopropyl, and placed back in isolation. Upon checking them tonight for the first time in about nine days I?m surprised to report signs of contamination were eliminated in all jars save one and mycelia colonization is nearly complete. The remaining contaminated jar shows tremendous progress in terms of the mycelium?s growth as compared to the tiny speck of contamination still present.

PS of course these jars were never shaken.

Thats really interesting, i would assume that the green mold was on the surface of the myc, by putting alcohol on it you might have killed it off whereas the myc already had enough mass to withstand the alcohol abuse. Neat idea!

that sounds cool, but how do you know if there's contams or not in the middle of the jar? have you birthed them yet?

Yes? though the contams were fairly robust, they were restricted to the surface (these jars had never been shaken). I am assuming the alcohol killed not only the contams but some of the myc penetrating to a depth of an inch or so. After the alcohol evaporated the mycelium could once again colonize the surface substrate. georgem

As far as contams still lurking in hidden portions of the spawn only time will tell. I suspect the source of the contamination was airborne and happened during the inoculation process. georgem

Wise Judgement isolating those suspect jars GeorgeM...I assume if this experiment shows further success that allocating less time between isopropyl treatment might annihilate the contam from gaining strength?

George, I'm assuming that you replaced the cap after squirting the 70% alcohol? Your description doesn't say.
