Why would it raise gas prices and why would there be less gas to go around? It's like getting everyone to buy RC Cola in order to get Pepsi and Coke to lower their prices, right?

Because then everyone will be buying their gas from the other gas companies, hence the gas that they have now has to make up for the sales they would already make plus all the sales that Exxon/Mobil used to make.

If everyone who drank Pepsi and Coke started to buy RC Cola, then the price of RC Cola would go way up at least temporarily (until they can ramp up production - which right now NONE of the oil co's can do). There would probably be an actual shortage of RC Cola - meaning some people who want some would have to go entirely without...while the people who do manage to get some would be bidding the price up against eachother just to get any cola at all.

I'm guessin that .gif in the first post represents blood for oil. I hear people say all the time that we (U.S.) is only interested in the middle east because of oil. What is so wrong about that?

Wars throughout history have been fought over resources; land, water, oil. Do you realize that if OPEC cut off our oil completely, and after we drained our reserves...our country/economy would collapse?

Most of the people that are fighting right now are volunteers, and unless you want to go fight to maintain our way of life...drop it.

Maybe the RC Cola analogy wasn't the best I could have used, but I couldn't think of anything else. It seems to me that if you started buying from the compeditors of Exxon/Mobil, of which there could be many, Exxon/Mobil would have to lower their prices to bring back customers. There are probably many other companies out there and I am thinking that they would not run out of oil. They would just get more. Why couldn't every other company just buy more??

Once again, they don't set the price of oil. If they did, then some oil companies would have better deals than others...but that's not the case. All oil companies sell oil at around the same price - depending mostly on the quality of the oil - and that price is set on the oil exchanges by market forces.

If everyone in America stopped buying from Exxon/Mobil, then they would just go sell their precious precious black gold elsewhere - and they would find customers elsewhere, at the market price.

There are probably many other companies out there and I am thinking that they would not run out of oil.

There aren't many oil majors. That's why they're called "oil majors"

The capital involved in exploring and drilling for oil, as well as refining it into a useable product, is far beyond what most corporations can afford.

They would just get more. Why couldn't every other company just buy more??

Because there's not much more to be had. That's the whole reason oil/gas prices are this high to begin with - search Peak Oil for the explanation, I've explained it one too many times as is.

I think this is the wrong attitude.

No one else in the world ought to pay for our excessive, unsustainable lifestyle, and instead of making war to sustain that lifestyle, we ought to accept the fact that we will eventually need to change it.

Can someone please explain why Shroomery member #7550, Trendal, is wrong??

Haven't owned a car in >10 years. I get everywhere by cycle.

Gotta admit I get a good chuckle out of gas prices. But I don't laugh too hard because everything I buy is affected by high gas prices.

But ultimately high gas prices are good. Why? Glad you asked...

When you make something more expensive, less people will buy it. The less gas bought, the less polution people create.

Frankly, I wish it'd hit $6/gal.

sorry, he's not very wrong. we aren't about to run out of oil, we are reaching the halfway point. as trendal said before, look up Peak Oil. I wrote the reasoning behind peak oil in a very quick and general way in this thread. its all common sense.

we've got 5-10, maybe 15 years till peak inflation kicks our ass. and even then Peak oil isn't the only major problem the world is running into at this time. you've got lack of usable water, a change in the Gulf stream due to the shrinking north pole (1/3 gone in 25 years), leading to a see level rise which will have to move about 250 million people who live on island nations.

each of these is oging to have a drastic effect on GNP and GDP.

in a global economy, if a huge economy goes under, the rest follow suit.

going back to oil, china and india are developing at a very fast rate, makign the peak come even sooner. population can only increase while the supply can only decrease.

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

try and buy your gas from chevron. chevron is a venuzalian company, so at least the profits are controlled by Hugo Chavez. Chavez has been using his country's oil wealth to help the poor people in his country, payback the foriegn debt of other south american countries, and he even donated winter heating oil to poor residents of Boston and New York this winter.
