No, because they don't set the price of oil - the market sets the price of oil.

And you can't just boycott the entire oil market, unless you like not having anything modern :smirk:

Plus no one ever goes along with these things anyway.

It won't work because enough people won't boycott them.

These sorts of things will never work because people these days don't have the balls. They just like to whine.

It's not so much a question of not having the balls, as it is the balls being directly supported by the cushion of oil.

Most people (99.9999%) couldn't survive in today's world without oil. It's a fundamental part of our lives. Most people don't want to be reminded of that fact, I think, so they avoid any decrease in consumption because even a small or short one might remind them of the truth.

Neither do I, but we're still causing the use of gas.

Everything you buy is brought to where you buy with gas or diesel.

Not to mention pretty much everything we buy contains something composed of petroleum products.

It's not about boycotting all oil companies.  We're only talking about Exxon/Mobil.  Supposedly, if you boycott Exxon/Mobil they will have to lower their prices.

I do not believe that oil companies have no control over the price of oil.  That seems like an excuse they use to justify gouging everyone with sky high gas prices.

Won't work. Not enough people care, and even less will actually participate.

I think the people care, there's just not enough organization.

If it became more widely know then I think it could work.

Supposedly, if you boycott Exxon/Mobil they will have to lower their prices.

Even if you could get the whole country to stop buying gas at Exxon/Mobil stations, they would find other buyers at the market price. It would also raise the price everywhere else, because there would be less gasoline to go around to the same number of people.

Why would it raise gas prices and why would there be less gas to go around? It's like getting everyone to buy RC Cola in order to get Pepsi and Coke to lower their prices, right?

I think he is saying...If we don't buy it, someone else will. If they buy it, we don't have it. If we don't have it, price goes up.

Less people buying gas = exporting it at a greater cost to compensate for said lost money?

Exxon/Mobile is the largest transnational corporation. its good to see some people interested in taking part against what they do, but they own the second largest oil reserve in the world. I'm sorry, but a couple of days of boycotting isn't going to help.

There will have be a huge shift in the way we do business as a world, especially since oil reserves will reach their peak in the next 5-10 years. This means half of the world's oil supply will be exhausted. when this happens, the increasing demand will meet decreasing supply. this is detrimental since everything will be more expensive, since demand will outstrip supply.

Inflation at this state will take over. food will be more expensive, clean water will be more expensive, transportation will be more expensive; this means GDP will go down, since the value of imports and exports will go up. Even the shipping of materials (ship and plane) are going to be more expensive which has an impact on global GDP and GNP.

At this point, wages will have to go down in order for businesses to keep their profits afloat, and then what? these are some serious issues that go well beyond a simple boycott

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Just to clarify once again. No one is suggesting boycotting ALL oil. ONLY Exxon/Mobil will be boycotted.

Also, this is NOT a one day thing. We're talking about buying oil from competitors of Exxon/Mobil for the rest of the year (at least).
