slow casing growth
    #5534170 - 04/19/06 04:17 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

my friend had a few quarts of colonized rye so he made two casings, but they have been in a tnt for well over a week with no growth. the tnt temperature is about 86 degrees. he used microwaved verm/coir casing mix, plenty moist but not soaked. the casings are in a plastic container with the lid on. he thought that the sealed lids are inhibiting growth, is there any validity to this? should he make two holes with polyfill gas exchange? thanks

I have never personally used holes for my wbs casings while they are in my TiT. How thick did you make your substrate level?

oops, substrate layer, not casing layer. its about 2.5-3 inches deep with a half inch of casing material on top

Strange. Typically you need FAE to fruit. Mycelium tends to like co2 more in it's incubation stage. Perhaps he had no holes at all and got a huge gas build-up..Then once he induced a bit of air, bam, rapid growth..

Glad it worked.

Agreed, but I tend to think it was about to "pop" anyway and this was just timing. Remember get that casing nice and moist to the point of near saturation especially now, you'll want to build up your moisture reserves now to capacity for the pinning stage. Read my pinning strategy for more information.
