Gas buildup. When you have the jars about 75% colonized, flip them upside down.

Nope, take the lid off and be sure it spills all over your incubator
But no really, flipping helps and make sure you've got tape off your holes. Best not to leave them on a completely flat surface, you want gas to exchange... on top of a paper towel is a good idea if you have a flat smooth bottom in your incubator. The cake will slide down a little bit over the course of a day leaving a gap up top that the myc can get to easier, and the gas buildup will get a chance to drain out the bottom. Once it turns that corner it gets moving pretty quick again.

or if you packed your mix into the jars too tight it might take longer to work its way through.

Mine were taking forever to colonize the bottom and I flipped them and taped them upside down to the side of the incubator, still took a god awful long time to finish though....

Here's a tip to help with this problem. Put a tablespoon of dry verm. in the bottom of your jars before adding your sub.

if you tip it upside down then wont the cake fall and cover your holes letting no air exchange. cuz if I did that mine would hit the lid...or do you want them to be sitting on the lid???

If you used a layer of Verm ontop of your BRF substrate then there would be no cause for concern. If you didnt, I would still do what these peeps suggested, although, this will create a suction effect and could possibly introduce contams...Also, the mycelium cake Im sure would "breath" sufficiently enough to allow gas exchange even if its sitting on the lid (with holes).
