casings - humidity
    #553346 - 02/16/02 04:48 AM (22 years, 11 months ago)

Hey everyone.. I'm just wondering what effect high humidity has on a casing? I'm not sure of the actually humidity level - but the casing is being kept in a perlite humidified terrarium. Im guessing the humidity is close to 100% - am I going to get a tonne of aborts - or is high humidity not all that bad for a casing? I'm kinda confused as to how a cake is perfectly happy with high humidity whereas everything I read says that casings should have no more than 90% humidity.
The casing has pinned and there are about 60 pins making their way towards the heavens.. should I act now to save the crop or will they survive more or less? The casing is a 350ml millet flour/verm cake cased with plain verm.

You might want to lower your humidity a bit before your pins abhort. Basiclly, your casing is already providing the moisture. Keeping the humidity at about 80 - 90% in the terrarium is just so the casing doesn't dry out.

Jus shift the lid on the top of your terranium a little so there isn't a seal and a little humidity should escape, bringing it down to around 85%

during pre-pinning/primordia formation you want to keep 92-95% rH..
after pinset drop back the rH to 85-89%...
