Phalaris arundinacea (2 kinds) and Astrophytum's at Lowe's!!

i had a great find at Lowe's today. there i was browsing through their plant section and saw some Salvia x superba and Salvia elgens(sp?) but decided they would be a waste to buy. Then i see a section dedicated to "Ornamental grasses". as i approached a female worker started to spray the section with a water hose, i asked her "you guys got phalaris gr..." before i could finish she responds with "yep 2 kinds" and points to them at the end of the stands. they had P. arundinacea var. variegated (Ribbon Grass) and var. Strawberries and Cream. I was tempted to buy the Cream variety because of its pink tint to its leaves but most of the plants were small and had alot of dead foliage on them, so i bought the normal striped version. $5.
i kept browsing and found a nice lil Aurora breed coleus plant. the aurora breeds have very small oddly shaped leaves. $2
so after this i went to their crappy cacti section (crappy cuz almost every marker tag is laying on the damn floor) and saw what looks to be a small cluster of Trichocereus brevispinulosus in a 6 inch pot but without a tag i couldnt be sure it was a Trich. then i spotted one beauty of an Astrophytum myriostigma($3). the first one i've had a chance to buy that had the small tufts of hair along each rib. I have 4 A. myriostigmas already, none with tufts, and 7 A. ornatums.
all in all, it was a great day at Lowe's. $10 and some change and i got 3 new additions to my ethno collection!
i'll post some pics when my cam stops being a bitch.

P. arundinacea is very common. if it doesnt already grow everywhere then you can buy it at farm shops(at least teh seeds) use it as forage. cree also used this grass to insulate boots. so is a true ethnobotanical:)

i know P. arundinacea is a very common plant. however i've never seen the strawberries and cream version in the wild, and all the wild grass i've collected seeds from has always been the pure green kind, as was the seeds i got from BBB.
i'm just glad to have some variegated plants to cross with my pure green plants and if they ever get any healthy looking berry/cream plants it'd also be a nice addition. i'd like to know what causes the pink pigmentation in this strain.
i also found this at Lowe's! Trichocereus huascha cristate!

Astrophytum cacti are ethno's correct? i've heard of them being called "false-peyote" or peyotillo(sp?). i know they contain alot of alkaloids (not mescaline) such as Pellotine, Hordenine, and Anhalidine i believe. i bet these would make a great ayahuasca admixture, i mean if someone who was into was to try it.

the alcaloids of atrophytums are minute, not much u can do with it.
it was used by NA's as a peyote substitute, so it cant be completely useless, they knew enuff to associate it with peyote after all. but to get any effect it seems like ud need a shitload of cacti...
still aside from representintg a bit of peyote culture and history its a nice looking cactus that adds some veriety to the look of your collection.

yeah, there was a specific report online that stated peyote having over 60 alkaloids, while this had only very few. including
tyramine and N-methyl-tyramine
B-phenethylamine and 3,4-dimethoxy-B-phenethylamine
and macromerin?
also known as Bishops Hat. it really does look like one, heh.

The striped varieties of phalaris grasses were initially bred for sheep-grazers in Australia. Sheep get 'phalaris staggers' and eventual emphysema from consuming high-alkaloid varieties. All the striped varieties are breed for low or absent alkaloids. Very pretty plants but not useful for alkaloid content.

I remember seeing several very tall san pedros on sale at an albertson's nursery in north phoenix. My friend and I were heavily into trichocereus research so we spotted em from a mile away, some were 6+ feet tall, but most looked like they were grown too fast. Either way, pick up some steaks and beer for me honey, and while your at it, load a 10 foot section of that mecaline cactus into the truck.

I got a gallon pot with 4 three foot tall san pedro's at lowes a couple years ago, they're great, when I search my local nurseries with a complete list in hand I always seem to find something good!
