Help Pan Subbs.
    #553230 - 02/16/02 12:37 AM (22 years, 11 months ago)

I live around the eugene corvallis area and I was planning on hunting for Panaeolus Subbalteatus are they in season now?
I read that they grow like weeds in the right habitat so if I look at just about any rotting hay stack will I most likely find them?

I'm in same area, have been picking these for many years. Decomposing hay/ straw is the habitat to look, but it's a bit early yet. Depending on rain & temperatures there might be a few in late March/ early April but they really don't start to flush heavy until May. In good wet years I've found them thru June up into early July.

But now is the time to drive around the back farm roads & scope out likely sites. Look for older uncovered haystacks, preferably on land where you won't have to trespass to get to them.

Also look for construction sites where hay bales are used for erosion control. These bales will often have mushrooms.

Anyway, here's hoping for a good rainy Spring. Last year sucked!

I was trying to tell a few folks in another Pan subb thread that subbs really don't start until late march early april. They won't fruit in cold weather, they are a warm weather species. You have to atleast wait until after the morels start fruiting, morels pop up just a few weeks before the subbs start(in my area that is)

Well, 1 oz. of fungus and 2 and 15/16 oz. of dirt! J/K
Remember, to make the mushrooms dry, all you have to do is get rid of that damn water. It may difficult, but possible.

That's a hard question to answer-Wet or Dry??? Hmmm......
Man, 3 lbs of dried mushrooms would fill a 35 gallon refuse container to the brim. New York City could get high twice from that many mushrooms.
Of course, I've never seen that many mushrooms at one picking in my life, so I'll not speculate any further.
Stay cool!-Levi7.

more than you can count in a week, the three lb weighed about 33.5 lb. fresh. took a few days just to pick, and that was in places where i knew they grew. it would take quite a bit longer if you don't know where to look.

well it has been warmer here in eugene for the past week and a half or so, and rained some in the past couple days, temps have been mid 50's or so. Do you think I'd have any luck going and scoping out by the airport tomorow?

How did you weigh 33.5 pounds of fresh subbalteatus??

How did you dry 33.5 pounds of fresh subbalteatus?

And, i assume that since the 33 (thirty-three) pounds in only a few (3?) days, then you had more than one location to pick them from.
-Because if you pick 11.13 pounds of fresh subbs one day from the one location, then it is safe to say that there wont be 11.13 pounds the next day, and 11.13 pounds (fresh) the third day, (They need at least 20 hours to grow back into full shrooms again, even in hot weather)
-Since you say you picked for only a few days, and a few equals three days

Also, how long does it take on average to sort through (and clean) 33.5 pounds of fresh subbalteatus??
-Well, i know as far as copelandia cyanescens go, it takes longer to sort through the mushrooms then it does to pick them.
-Usually it takes me at least an hour to go through a pound (1 pound) of fresh copelandia..........
And copelandia are similar in size and stature as the Pan subbs you scored.

Re: Help Pan Subbs. [Re: dead_wire]

So, roughly, you have around 33.5 hours of sorting through your shrooms and laying them out to dry (or maybe you had several dozen food dehydrators with you)...
-Isnt that hard on your back to sit and do that for 33.5 hours non-stop?

So, one of your three days of shroom picking was devoted to doing that.
-So, you were actually picking nearly 17 pounds of subbalteatus within a two day picking period.
Am i right about that?

So, you must have had several dozen dehydrators with you on this trip.
-And also, if you were only gone for three days..the last 24 hours must have been down time, just relaxing and waiting for the last 17 pounds to become dry.

Now i see.

It can be done.

But only in California.

Would these be found as far down as Humboldt County? I've been mushroom hunting for a collection but haven't seen any, but then again I've been in the woods. Will you find these near farms? They grow in manure or compost types of substratum? Where you guys suggest looking?

Well, dead_wire picks roughly 34 pounds of shrooms an hour.
-That isnt 34 pounds dry though, only 34 pounds fresh.
So dont be getting your hopes up too high.
dead_wire claims that this mushroom is like a "weed".
He only picks the large clusters of subbs that weigh several ounces each
and then he fills double lined paper grocery bags to the brim with the subbies.
Easy as pie.
He lives in California.
He travels to only specific locations of which the subbs are known to grow.

....Looking across the horizon of subb lined pastures, the excitment of
seeing such a sight is enough to pick several thousand pounds a day.
Last year he found a 33.5 pounds of them, 2 1/2 hours.
He is known by many up down and across the west coast as
"The Subb God"

-Earning this nickname after numerous accounts of him making
yearly pilgramages to specific locations that are known to grow
hundreds of thousands of clusters (some of which weigh over,
24 pounds) of "subbs" (thats not dry weight, thats fresh weight).
Then he dries them and then he drives them back home.
Every year.

He has one patch of subbs that stain purple and have blue spores.
-This field has appropriately coined the name "Subb-Heaven".
This ultra potent strain of subbs yeild more potent mushrooms than
the cubes that he picks at a different known location, but not
quite as potent as the liberty caps found in the farmers watermelon
gardens.

One time he took me picking and i found a cluster of subbs so big
that i needed his help to yank it out of the ground.
-I couldnt believe my eyes when he whipped out the hedge clippers
from the 4-wheelers storage compartment to chop them out of the ground!
It amazed me.
I took pictures of this all with a disposable camera.
-Unfortunately the camera was forgotten about during harvesting and
was left at the bottom of one of the collection barrels and the weight
of all the shrooms actually crushed the camera, exposing the film to
all the blue subb juice that collects on the bottom of the barrels.

I thought I found 3 fresh Pan Subbs once in a Bank's grassy area. They ended up being Pan Foenisecii, so I didn't eat them. Man......those were the days. Anyway, I was so excited about the 40 lbs of Chanterelles that I'd found the day before, I accidentally told everyone that I'd picked 40 lbs of Pan Subbs. Before I realized that I had made a huge mistake, everyone around me started picking on me. When I tried to tell the truth, people didn't want to listen, as it was such an overblown rumor by then.
BTW, I only have 1 friend now and that's only because I give him my Cyans every fall. Man, I'm lucky I got a few spots to pick in!!!!!!

Hey Levi,

We have a major complaint here..

Big problems in little china,

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum7&Number=561820&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1&vc=1

So i went to the local instrument store today.
Nice looking place...
Then i noticed (after looking around for a while) that not a single stringed instrument in the entire store was in tune!~

-So i go up to the chinese guy at the desk and asked him
"why arent any of your instruments tuned?"
-well he of course spoke very little english
and said pointing to himself;
"Owner,  owner of stoe  "
Then he pointed to another sales clerk lady,
directing her to speak english with me..
I asked why dont you have any of your instruments tuned??
--It turned out that neither the owner or the clerk play instruments,

Just a biznuss... a really shitty one at that.

Hey, I read MJshroomer's articles and went out along airport road today. I saw only 1 small haystack in the airport area. Could anyone perhaps point me in the right direction as far as areas to pick?

If you saw 1 small haystack at the airport, then that 1 small haystack would be the point in the right direction.
I'm not too familiar with Panaeolii, but I'm pretty sure that the ticket is "rotted"or partially decomposed haystacks. Remember that fungus is part of the process of decomposition.
Good luck next time, man!
