Mycelia vs mycelium
    #5531333 - 04/18/06 09:40 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

If you use bacteria and bacterium as a model, you'd think that mycelium would be singular, and mycelia would be the plural form. I can't really wrap my mind about only having one mycelium though. Maybe if you had the mycelium from a cube and mycelium from a cyan and you were talking about both it would be mycelia? I've seen mycelia used the same way as mycelium, though. Any clarification? Am I just thinking too much?

Also, in other news, I've got WBS soaking as we speak to start my first monotub. I'll let you know how it goes. The end!

Well according to Webster there the same definition....

I have seen it, like in mycelium running and I pondered it as well.

But other then the content, speaking of something specific, I dont know either..

Hypha is a single fungal strand, hyphae are more than one of these strands. Mycelium is the entire filamentous network of one fungal organism. Mycelium also refers to the networks of many fungal organisms. Mycelia is a term reserved usually in reference to the mycelium of different species of fungi. It is confusing because its use is very similar to the term, fish. Fish is both singular and plural. A fish, two fish, seventeen fish, etc. Fishes is usually reserved to refer to more than one species of fish. The fishes of the Great Barrier Reef, for example. Mycelia of the basidomycetes, would be a parallel example. But, to confuse things even more, not all are in agreement about this particular convention, and you will frequently see people use mycelia as the simple plural of mycelium. So, it's not wrong either way, but the first convention is more prevalent. Hey, I know you just fell asleep, but don't blame me, you asked.
