Depression and Shrooms

After deciding that shrooms were the only other drug I would try besides weed and beer, and really looking forward to the experience, I began to look up on them. I came across a web site that said that if a person has a mental illness or depression they shouldn't try shrooms. Not to be emo, but I have a pretty sever case of depression and was suicidal several years ago. I was wondering if anyone else on here has ever taken shrooms while having depression and what it was like and if you had any tips to avoid a bad trip. I was also wondering if smoking or drinking could be done before hand to calm me.

Some people have claimed shrooms helped their depression and some have said they made it worse. A few beers before tripping might take the edge of comming up though, Do a little more research on the subject
best of wishes man

well.. it depends on how the experience is for you. If you have a trip that emphasizes all of the problems in your life, that might bring you down or give you an oppurtunity to understand and feel better because you know the root of the problem. That's why I think the choice of whether or not shrooms should be done is dependant on the kind of character that you have. If you are trying to be positive and understanding, you have a good chance at a great trip.
However, being that shrooms are completely unpredictable, you should always be aware of the fact that you can never know. It may turn out that you start to see horrible hallucinations and think a bunch of horrible thoughts while getting in a mind loop that makes you go insane and get naked while running around the neighbourhood trying to escape the imaginary killer gnomes chasing you.
That's just the way it is. Some things are out of your hands. So.. you can be confident, but just realize that shrooms are not a game and they will effect your psychy. Do you really want to take that chance?
If that answer's yes, make sure you do it at the right time. Think of cool stuff to do. Think of a cool place to be. Try to make it a great experience.

In my humble opinion, it would be a rarity for shrooms to make a person more depressed.
There are many contributing factors to consider;
First off is the set & setting, the most important attribute of the trip is your mindset going into it and where you are tripping. You should be in a happy mood and have a totally open mind with no worries or concerns that may surface and become the central focus. You should be in a comfortable and safe place where you won't be surprised or disturbed.
Second is dosage, for a first timer with a depression problem, I'd recommend a small dose to start with, like 1 - 2 grams (Dried Cubensis).
If you're taking any prescription drugs that contain MAOI's - be very careful. They can cause the shrooms to be twice as potent.
Third (in answer to one of your specific questions), I highly recommend getting very stoned immediately after dosing the shrooms... It will make the come-up very easy to take. The shrooms will just smoothly join in on your weed buzz. Don't do any alcohol before or during the trip unless you want to decrease the effect of the psilocybin.
Finally, plan on using music through headphones to bring you total joy. Whatever your favorite music is, listen to it through headphones.
Here's an example of a great tune to listen to on mushrooms: Triumph - Magic Power
Have fun and let us know how it went, if you decide to do it.

Why where you depressed? Chemical Imbalance?
Did you have anxiety problems while you where depressed?
Be more specific, shrooms can actually help depression but in some situations make it worse.

I would not take mushrooms while feeling overly depressed at a given time. I used to have pretty heavy depression, and mushrooms did help me. They did not cure me or make all my problems go away - they shedded the light on my problems that I needed to see clearly. If that is what you are aiming for, then you will probably be ok. Don't expect your trip to bring you the results it has brought others, though. Above all else, wait for the right time and keep an open mind.
